Try deleting your gta_sa.set file. That fixed some GTA:SA issues of the past. Other than that... I'm stumped.

IU've been able to get the game to recignize custom resoutions. maybe make one and try it out.

There were no changes upon the deletion of the gta_sa.set file.

I would like to set some custom resolutions and asprct ratios like I had to do with Doom 3 on my last PC...but I would not know where to begin with GTA:SA. I can not find a config file to do such a thing.

I looked in ....DocumentsGTA San Andreas User Files
I found no config files.

I looked in ...Steamsteamappscommongrand theft auto san andreas
I found one configuration file... "strem.ini" ...amoung "gta-sa.exe"
Contents:
memory 13500
devkit_memory 13500
vehicles 12
pe_lightchangerate 0.0005
pe_lightingbasecap 0.35
pe_lightingbasemult 0.5
pe_leftx 16
pe_topy 16
pe_rightx 16
pe_bottomy 16
dontbuildpaths

At this point I think I may have to live with playing it at 1024x768 (4:3)

Some of you reading this may say "Why not play it at 1280x1024 (5:4)"
Well, no matter what res It is set on it is displayed at (4:3) so the 1280x1024 (5:4) is sort of smushed.
The best I can do is play it on the highest res availible in (4:3)

So....1024x768 (4:3) it is until further notice I guess.

It is amazing that one can get a better PC and have the quality of a game go south.....go figure.

Thank you everyone for trying to help, I really do appreciate it.

This site has always been a real help.

If anyone gets any ideas, please drop them in the bucket.

Thanks,
Charles

You don't by chance have an auxiliary monitor hooked up do you? If so, try unplugging it prior to launching the game. I only ask because people usually leave that im/chat/firefox 17" lcd out of their system specs :)

Nope...This Notebook is pretty much out of the box with no aditional displays or browsers...etc.

The first thing I did after turning it on was make sure my drivers were up to date and download steam so I could get all my games up to snuff for my christmas trip.

....long trips need long games...hence GTA:SA :D

The resolution is stored in the set file but it is in a, "difficult" format. If you want we can try and work out what values to change with a hex editor to get 1920x1080.

It might seem awkward at first but once you do it a few times it is a simple thing to do.

EDIT - When I mean, "difficult" I mean the values are not in a format that we are used to working with but they should be simple enough if we compare your set file to mine.

Sounds like something I have no knowledge in what so ever.

Point me into the correct direction and let me know what I have to do.

I'm game.

Go into the game and make sure it is set to 1024x768 - 32 color and widescreen toggle on. Exit.

Open the set file with HxD. Scroll to the bottom so it looks something like this.

Copy the stuff you see at the bottom.

20 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 21 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 22 00 00 00 05 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 23 00 00 00 06 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 24 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 25 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 26 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 27 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 29 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 2A 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 2B 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 2C 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 2D 00 00 00 08 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 2E 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 2F 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 30 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 31 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 32 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 33 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 34 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 35 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 36 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 37 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 38 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 39 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 3A 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0A D7 23 3B 00 00 01 03 00 00 00 54 66 66 E6 3F 01 01 00 19 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 01 1D 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 40 40 08 00 01 00 01 00 00 01 00 04 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 5F

And post it here. We will compare and see if they are the same. If so, I will change my game to 1920x1080, compare the changes in set, and have you apply them.

Well that doesn't look good at all. It might be the game has a large fixed resolution list so let's try that.

First get the game running in a window so you can test without potentially losing your monitor signal.

Near the bottom you have 54 9A 99 99 3F 00 01 01 03.

What you should do is back up the file and change the 03 value in increments and see if it changes the game's resolution. So 04, 05, 06, and the like. Just select it in HxD and type over it. Then save and exit.

But for kicks, try 25 first. That is 1920x1080-32 for my game.

If that is doing nothing you can make a copy of your set file at one resolution and than change the game's resolution and compare the two files in HxD. Just open both at the same time and scroll down one block at a time by clicking on the right the scroll bar where the bar is not at. You should only have to do it two or three times before you reach the end of the file. What you are looking for is anything that changes.

Unfortunately I was not able to run this game in a window. I tried adding "-window", "-windowed", "-safe" etc to the target of the desk top shortcut and the launch options via steam.

I also had no luck when changing the number you specified. Every time I changed it the game reverted back to 800x600x32.

To get .set files with only the res altered I deleted the gta-sa.set file and launched the game. I changed only the resolution exited and cut/pasted the .set file to the desk top.

I did this with 800x600x32 and 1024x768x32. And I used the first instance these resolutions appeared in the game options.. Since they are listed twice in the video options I wanted to make it clear which ones I used.

I also did it twice with 1024x768x32 which resulted in different outcomes...which sort of threw me for a loop.

Results :
First let’s look at 800x600x32 and 1024x768x32.

800x600x32

1024x768x32

Now here are the two 1024x768x32...obtained with the exact same method. Only one change between the two...yet they are the same game settings.

1024x768x32 - The first one as seen above

1024x768x32 - The second one. You can see only one change.

I really do not know what to make of any of this.
