Howdy, and I'm back! Haven't been on for a long time.

I'm building a new computer, and I'm hoping it will last for a good 3-5 years for my gaming wants.

Gaming needs: A LCD monitor for heavy FPS gaming!

i7 920 D0
Prolimatech Megahalems+Panflo 120x38mm+clip
Foxconn Bloodrage GTi
OCZ Gold 2x3gb (PC12800)
ATi Saphire HD 5870
120gb x2 Intel SSD + Caviar Black HD
DeathAdder + MS1 Pro keyboard
AD700's or MDR-7506's (555 senheisers maybe)

Now for monitor, very important.. I consider low input lag or non a bigger benefit than having a 8bit+ monitor. I want to experience FPS gaming at it's finest.

Now this brings up a huge problem:
I want a monitor @ 1920x1200 (maybe 1080, if you can tell me that most games in the future will support this..cod4#2/BF BC2)
0.27 dot pitch, low input lag/response time.

I came across two monitors:

Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM & Samsung 233RZ

Samsung 233RZ
Supports a smaller resolution, uses a dualtype of DVI cable (DVI is only input the monitor has I believe) for 120hz. I heard this monitor also has close to no input lag, just like the 2493.
I believe Viewsonic offers a 120hz monitor (same resolution support as the 233RZ), but has worse colors and lower input lag.


Can someone guide me in the best path? I will wait to make my purchase until MARCH! I am patient, and have learned it pays off.

I wouldn't mind getting 2 of these monitors in the future, for eyefinity. (this is a maybe)

Secondly, I'd go out on a limb and say close to all future games will support both 1920x1200 and 1920x1080, so that comes down to your personal preference.

The 120hz monitor is for 3D gaming, which is basically nVidia only at the moment, so if you're purchasing a 5870, it won't be all that useful.
If you're really looking for quality in your monitor, consider getting a Dell U2410, pricey, but it has a DP connection for the 5870 and an IPS panel.

I will edit my first post, maybe I wasn't too clear. I want to do some heavy FPS gaming on a monitor, and I'm not sure a 8bit/10bit monitor can offer the low input/response times like a TN-panel can. Please WSGF is my only hope to pointing me in the right direction. Just think about it this way, maybe my eyes aren't the best..ive been using a Samsung SyncMaster191 since 2002. I never changed a setting, and it was always on full brightness/contrast. The day I went from CRT to LCD made me shed a tear playing Counter-Strike. I obviously got use to it, because I'm still using it. The problem is: I want a monitor that can keep up with a fast paced game without leaving any trails on the players legs, or blurring the stairs on a stair case (as I run up in-game).

Are these new 22" 120hz monitors worth it for a FPS gamer that only wants to play COD/BF/CS? I was hoping with a nice build like the one I posted should be playing on 1920x1080 (1920x1200 is preferred) at the least.

I'm not entirely sure the 120Hz monitors are really worth it. I can't really help too much with a low-response time monitor as I've always been of the opinion that the figures quoted are more 'wishful thinking' than actually what the monitor does in normal circumstances.

Ultimately, you'll need two things:

Low response time
Low input lag

They're not the same thing. ;)

There are lots of screens marketed as '2ms' response time, but whether they are or not is up for debate. ;) You'll also need to look around to see whether anywhere has done lag tests... a high response time will be no good if the screen lags 50ms behind mouse movement. :) ('Electronics light' (few in-build functions) screens like the Dell 3007WFP have next to no lag on them, but it's response time is something like 8ms Grey-to-Grey...)

I know you're in California, but I find Scan easier to navigate than NewEgg. These links are just to give you some ideas. :)

Personally I'd go for the larger screen than the smaller one, but I'm a res junkie. 8)

Input lag is caused by processing and or scaling. IMO the reason the 3007 dell is so good as it has no scaler in it.

the response time is down to the screen.

my IPS screen has around 15/20ms lag at worst, thats about as good as you can expect from a LCD, they generally are a little worse, but a few are a little better

Thanks for the wondeful replies and helpful information! I really do want to make a computer, and it could even handle 2560x resolution gaming, but I really want an LCD with low input/response times.


That being said I heard there are no 24" monitors that run 1920x1200 with RTC? What is RTC and why is it important?

I am wondering when Alienware will drop there huge curved DLP technology computer monitor?

Any news on a 120hz monitor dropping in the market?
These 22" are a bit too small for my liking, but if they really do out perform..then it should be worth it!


I am willing to put my gaming rig/monitor to a halt, until March.

A lot can change by then, but I would like to do as much research/browsing as possible.

basic method: a camera taking photos with very high shutter speed

however whether this is worth it or not is really a question of taste
if I had the money I'd buy one personally and just to use 120Hz no 3D ...
I find myself quite sensitive to movement irregular smoothness, however I don't the fucking know if I would really feel the difference (I said "feel" on purpose here)

I really appreciate the help, if there was a reputation system. You would have been awarded +1, haha. Guess the next questionis...do I wait a monitor that supports 120hz @ 1920x1200? Or would Alienware come out with that prototype 2008 DLP computer monitor?
