So, I've downloaded the patching tool, patched the game for 1280 x 800 and edited the height and width settings in the game's .ini file and for some reason the game only plays the opening flashing of logos in my chosen resolution and then reverts back to the standard resolution. And when I try to select the "1280 x 800" newly available option in the graphics menu the game completely ignores it :'(

Try switching to some other resolution first, then selecting your chosen resolution.

However, it's not going to do you any good to run the game at that resolution anyway. Please read the notes section here:
