I finally upgraded my 7900GS to an 8800GT! I teared up a little when I ran Stalker. :D

It's also great fun to play Half-Life 2 with everything maxed out at over 100 fps. :P

Which brand/version did you get? I read somewhere that some of the 8800s have bigger, quieter fans now that cool just as well as the old ones. Not sure if it's the ones with the G92 GPU or the old style ones though.

Nice. :) I recently moved from an X1950XTX to a (temporary) 8800GT, and seeing framerates nearly triple at the same settings was quite impressive.

does this mod add that much to the experience? i've bought the orange box and have finished the main game + ep1 and i'm around half-way through ep2. i've also just done some major upgrading to my pc. from a 2 gig amd64 3800 with a 7900 card, to an intel q6600 with a 9600gt and 8 gig of ram.

is it worth it to install this mod, and i will it mess up steam in any way?

edit: and which is the best one to get? a quick google returns a lot of different options.

You want either CM7 or CM8 BETA.

CM7 here:

CM8 BETA here:
http://halflife2.filefront.com/file/Fakefactorys_Cinematic_Mod_V80_Part_16;89942

CM8 is currently in beta so I downloaded CM7.

I have not yet played the mod, my new computer is not here yet. But I have downloaded the CM7 mod to my HDD waiting for my new computer.

You will need to have a 64bit system with at least 3 GB ram. This is because the mod loads 2GB texture data into ram at launch and WIN32 has problems with programs addressing more than 2GB silly Microsoft.

From what I understand you will see drastic visual improvements, and little details in the textures that didn't make it into the original game which are supposed to be really cool if you like looking at everything close.

As I understand it both 32bit and 64bit have '2gb issues'. The main advantage of being under 64bit is that you can have a full 4gb total which in turn means an app has a full 2gb to mess around with. I remember reading something about max any app. can use at once is 2gb.

If the app was coded as a 32 bit app, then yes, it doesn't matter what ##-bit your windows is. It's down to the application. If you are playing on a 64 bit windows with a 64 bit game however, the RAM it can offer goes on basically forever. However, I don't know of ANY games that have made a 64-bit version. Not enough people have 64 bit windows to play the game as it wouldn't work in 32-bit.

The only ones I know of are:
UT2004: unable to play due to constant crashes
Farcry patch: not really 64bit that I've heard
One of those battleship 3000 or whatnot things.
