As far as I'm aware 5040x1050 is possible on a dual-link DVI.

Yeah it is, I mistakenly thought 2560x1600 was max possible, it isnt. 5040x1050 is getting close to the limit but it fits.

So what exactly is the maximum dual-link DVI resolution? I stare at that wikipedia page every once in a while and I still can't figure it out.

From what I could tell, the max res of dual link is 3840x1200 ( 1920x1200x2) there are some monitors that float around that support that resolution, but they are high dollar monitors for X-ray viewing and things like that...WQUXGA is what the resolution is called

The maximum bandwidth of a Dual-link DVI cable is 7.92 Gbit/s

With 48 bits/pixel:

7.92 Gbit / 60 Hz / 48 = 2.75 megapixels.

With 24 bits/pixel:

7.92 Gbit / 60 Hz / 24 = 5.5 megapixels.


This gives us a maximum resolution of 5.5 megapixels to play with when using 24bits/px.

Seeing as:

5040 x 1050 = 5.292 megapixels,

It fits within (although barely) the 5.5 megapixel limit.

Hopefully this helps clarify it for some people! And if any of it's wrong, I take no responsibility because it's just what I've tried to make sense of from the wikipedia page :)

Makes sense to me. I didn't know how many bits there are per pixel, which was holding me up.

I assume 24 bits/pixel is standard?

Hello fellow WSGFer's

This is what Matrox answer was to me when I asked them if they would or could increase resolutions for TH2G in the future.....

The maximum resolutions are largely determined by VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) compliance standards which dictate a maximum number of pixels—currently 4000 horizontally—which can be outputted per port. For this reason, Matrox does not know if or when higher maximum resolutions will be supported.


They are basically saying that VESA dictates what they are capable of doing. So therefore the way I see it, VESA is the source to which should draw our attention?

Apparently, technologies must be approved by VESA before they can be incorporated into the open market.

Click "press room" for recent VESA meetings with companies presenting there technology. You can see what might be coming in the future.

Unfortunately, I don't see any news that might help Matrox have the ability to increase the resolutions of TH2G.

Based on Matrox answer to me, the only hope for increasing the horizontal resolution would be for VESA to allow more maximum pixels per port?

My question is where or why did VESA come up with the number of 4000 pixels per port? And will this be increased in the future? What would it take to be able to increase?

Maybe someone here has that knowledge or can find something pertaining to this on the VESA site and translate it into english?

So if the TripleHead2Go is made to be not compliant with VESA, but we get 5040x1080, what are the ramifications of that? I don't recall seeing any "VESA" labeling on my TripleHead2Go packaging...
