Wondering what performance is like in-game? With my HD5970 I can tailor the settings, some low, some high to get under the 1GB VRAM limit. But I still only get 33-40fps.. and it actually feels worse. GPU usage is 90% and 99% per GPU.
Since 1x 7970 isnt really any faster, Im worried if I upgrade Ill get similar FPS with a larger framebuffer.

Well the extra framebuffer will only help if you're hitting the vram wall. In which people have been hitting 1.8GB VRAM usage it at 1080p.
Do you ever tank to the low single digits? If so, you're hitting that wall.

Yep, have seen it but its easy to work around. So anyone with a HD7970 (single) can confirm average realworld FPS (Eyefinity)? Its a bit sad if it really is around the same as mine (HD5970 @ 920 /1300).

I suspect a 6990 would be a better buy.

I have a single HD 7970 and run at 6048 x 1200 I have everything on Ultra with no AA. The game runs very smooth for me. I average between 30 - 40 FPS except for a couple maps, which might dip into the 20s. I upgraded from 2 HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 cards and it is quite an improvement. The game just feel smoother not using crossfire. I can actually play Arkham City maxed without AA where as before I could not even turn on the DX11 features. Running at this high of a resolution there is no need for AA any way. I would sell that 5970 while it is still worth something, and if money isn't an issue get the HD 7970. Good luck.

Cool thanks for the info. Tell me though, if you lower details (Ultra is nice and all but) can you get away with 2x AA? Im really noticing pixel pop a lot more than lesser effects. :(

Well for me to get a reasonable frame rate with 2xAA I had to put everything else on "medium", I did keep HBAO on though. Not sure what you mean by pixel pop the game looks great to me.

Well I mean the game has a lot of detail, object and long draw distance. Which means that many objects are not quite one pixel large and pop in and out on screen (telephone wires are a killer for this in any game).

I would considered it really noticable in BF3.. are you running with Post Process AA (FXAA) enabled? The ingame option smudges the image so maybe its not noticable. Im using the standalone FXAA injector but it doesnt seem to effect all game items.

Found this good explanation here:

Another effect of aliasing is the shimmering, that happens if the character moves in the scene or if the scene itself changes (e.g. waving trees). This shimmering is caused by the movement of the "jaggies". This is especially bad, if you have fine details, like tree branches, which are too small to be correctly drawn at the given resolution. These details tend to "pop in" and "pop out" with every smallest movement, which usually causes a heavy flickering of these structures. This effect is equally apparent with high resolutions (the detailed structure has just to be farther away from the viewer), so increasing the resolution is not really an alternative.
