Hey guys im currently thinking of upgrading my 6970 to 6990.
I can run 1x6970 on eyefinity 5760x1080 at about 40fps on medium

1.has anyone got a 6990 and runs bf3 on eyefinity? What is the framerate? Is it significantly higher?
2.should i just buy another 6970 and run in crossfire?

I am basically wanting to run Bf3 in High-ultra settings at about 60+ frames per second,so what would the better option be?

The only problem i have with xfire is that my motherboard will only run at 16x pci and 8x pci

any help be great guys

If you have a look at Ibrins' HD 6990 Review review, you'l see that 2x 6970's are pretty much on par with a single 4gb 6990. The performance loss on a 8x PCI-E slot is minimal.

Or you can always get a second 6970 and then get a motherboard that supports dual 16x PCI-E, like the gigabyte UD7.

I have 6990 and I could run bf3 @ 5760x1080 before the patch. I had more or less 60fps ( in bazaar fps dropped) with high textures and post aa rest at medium. Problem I'm having is that the game only used the other gpu while other was pretty much sleeping all the time so I'm just wondering how are you running at so low fps when I'm basically running underclocked 6970.

But 6990 should run bf3 eyefinity at 60fps atleast if you drop tessalation and msaa.

I was under the impression(which i was told) was that if you had a second 6970 card in 8x rail then it was worthless?
So if i did get another and run in xfire then it would run pretty well?Would my FPS rise?I dont wanna buy one and its pointless.

My current 6970 card can run in eyefinity 5760 x 1080 at med-high at bout 40fps
I dont understand why i cant get more outta this card if i have been told i should do.

Any ideas to make it run better then.

Ps i dont see much difference between high-ultra,do you guys?

The performance difference is negligible. While it is slower, you wouldn't notice any difference while playing a game if one card is on an 8x lane.

This article is based on last generation hardware, but there really isn't much difference between the 5000 and 6000 series cards.

As for adding another card, Battlefield 3 scales really well with multi-card solutions. The [H] shows nearly double the framerates with 6970 CFX compared to a single card using the same quality settings (in single player).

Nice read,thanks

As you say it is minimal to have cards running in 16/8 x lane,so i will purchase another 6970.

I have 1000wt psu so that should be sufficient to run both cards in crossfire,i take it?

Is it easy to just install another card, obviously i never tried this before,im a little hesitant lol

Thanks for your help man appreciated

Make sure there is enough current going through your +12V rails, not to mention that you have a separate lane open for each card. I've read that the 6970 requires at least 18 amps, plus a little extra head room since you never want your power to be maxed. So I'd say 25 amps each. As for power, figure around 200-250 watts per card. Add the power from the other components in your system together with your video cards and multiply it by 1.333 to get you system's total power requirement.

Installing the extra card should be as easy as uninstalling your drivers, plugging the card into your system, and reinstalling the drivers. If the drivers are like nVidia's, it should detect that your system is Crossfire capable and then you just need to enable it. CFX does not require the transport bridge that SLI does.

I am running 5760x 1080. I had one 6970. IT ran the game well but the frame rates were dropping kinda low. in the low 30's and so. I figured Id buy a second 6970 and crossfire it. This did double my frame rates. IT however creates such horrible Microstutters that the game is unplayable with Crossfire enabled. Ive been trying to tweak this for days and have come to the conclusion that it just does not work. I tried disabling hyperthreading and all.

Do yourself a favor. dont buy a second 6970. I also read that the 6990 has the same problems as 2 6970s. Go Nvidia. Thats what Im gonna do . Im selling these cards. I'm over AMD at this time. They need to fix these drivers immediately .

Just do a google search for " eyefinity crossfire stutter"

There's also the 7xxx series coming out soon. But of curse, that will bring immature drivers along with it...
