That is why Matrox never achieved success with GXM boxes with the mainstream public.

Plus the fact that LCDs were really expensive, and 3x CRT would turn most desks into a pile of rubble (if they'd even fit).

True enough, LCD prices crashing finally got AMD's attention and AMD got NVIDIA's attention. Still practically speaking, needing only a single card to do this kind of stuff is pretty handy. It's a shame that DP hasn't made market penetration with projector and LCD manufacturers like HDMI has though. I suspect it'll take 2-5 years before DP is standard on new LCD models. I foresee DVI phasing out in favor of current HDMI and DP specs that have enough bandwidth to feed more than a 30". I'm interested to see what these specs generate as far as panel resolutions now that we can get past the Dual-DVI bandwidth limit. I foresee a 4kHD panel being fed with a single cable soon. Frankly the sooner the better. If 4kHD came to the panel market, I'd like to see 2560x1600 panels start tanking in price like 1080p did a short while ago into the mainstream.

I read that 5x1 is enabled by using two DVI, the HDMI and the two DP ports? Could anyone confirm that is the way 5x1 is done with these drivers and 6000-series?

No. I gather you can only use 4 displays on the 6xxx series until displayport hubs become available next year (allowing you to connect multiple monitors to each of the displayport.. ports)

Only 2 ports out of the 2x DVI + 1x HDMI can be used at once. So no 5x1P on the current 6xxx cards for now..

5x1 landscape would easily push the FOV over 180 degree mark. Most games don't like that and would probably CTD from the camera code. Plus, I know the 5000-series had a upper pixel width limit of 8000? pixels. Anyone know if it's the same on the 6000-series or if the pixel count is wider?

Frankly, I think 5x1 portrait mode looks awesome. I'd show 5x1 portrait 1080p projector if I could get a sponsor on the projectors. I know BenQ W1000's would work. We tested one portrait rotated at the AMD 6800-series launch event to see if they'd handle the thermals of being rotated.

What's wrong with projectors being portrait, as opposed to landscape? Wouldn't the heat still just rise out of the vents?
