Dragon Age: Origins - The way it should be
I know this is "old news" to some people, but I bet some people will greatly appreciate this. If you are a true RPG fan, like I am, you will no doubt be very gladly about it as this game is ageless.
I remember playing the game a couple of years ago, when it lunched so much and enjoying every second of it. At the time I was having only one monitor so everything looked right. Recently after finishing Dragon Age 2 for the 6th time, I wanted to revisit the place where "it all begun". So Dragon Age Origins found it's way back on my Hard Drive yet again. Sadly the Eyefinity/Surround support Bioware gave to the game is "nice" but in the end broken and unusable. Therefore, I thought about creating a fix for the game in order to be able to play it again in all its glory in 3D Surround, which means the default UI simply would not cut it.
Sadly, as I was very busy lately with a lot of other stuff going around, my work on this fix was done over across a big length of time. The fix was initially created as an "in-house" fix and I wasn't planning to make a public release of it, but since I like the way it looks I thought to share it. The greatest challenge was to figure the mouse coords. Since the UI is interact-able this was needed to be fully functional. However the location of the top most left position is hard-coded in the engine and I couldn't find any way of nicely changing this. So I had to work around it.
Another problem was with the marker line-up. The exact same resolution value is used for both the UI and the marker UI. Correctly altering this was also tricky. This is the reasons why the markers only show on the middle screen (since the resolution of the UI was down-scaled to one monitor)
Bare in mind that is not 100% flawless and some "small" annoying things exist:
Fixes
- UI/HUD completely centered on the central monitor.
- Inventory and menus fully working
- In-game skill bar, party portraits fully selectable and usable.
- Markers perfectly lining with the objects.
- It does NOT fix the problem with the speedTree drawing distance found in the game.
Minor annoyances
- During conversations dialog options cannot be selected with the mouse (actually they can but the "logic" location of the buttons is on the right monitor) but can be selected with the keyboard.
- During party selection menu, companions cannot be selected with the mouse (actually they can but the "logic" location of the buttons is on the right monitor)
- Markers are only shown on the center monitor and not the peripheral ones.
For all of the above, disabling the plugin making the selection and re-enabling the plugin does the trick. For convenience you can bind the middle mouse button (only) for a quick toggle between modes.
The plugin will work only with the latest version (1.05) on both Steam and Origin
Please feel free to test the plugin using WideScreen Fixer and share your opinions below;)
