You can change the FOV in single player of Section 8: Prejudice with a console command (and piggybacked binds in ini files), but the fov resets when you come out of a lot of modes (overdrive, scopes, ironsights) so it is fairly useless. The FOV is locked to 70 degrees in multiplayer.

How would one get around this limitation (outside of waiting for TimeGate to add a suitable option to adjust the FOV to something sane for a 16:10 aspect ratio)?

Well basically you're going to have to hack it. I used cheat engine to look for the FOV value and then lock the value at something sane (like 110).

All unreal games do this. There's no easy fix for this. I wish there was because section 8 (the original) was fun as hell but only in 16:9 and on one monitor. le sigh.

Well, after reading your post I went through an interestingly educational set of steps to attempt to do the same thing using "cheat engine" (I had no idea of its existence, nor how to use it). Unfortunately I get to the part where I am to "find out what writes to this address" and S8:P crashes. So I have some questions:

1) I'm guessing that there is cheat detection in this title that will fairly easily detect Cheat Engine mucking with memory addresses. Have you actually done this without getting your GFWL user account banned, or whatever might happen for getting caught?

and 2) If it isn't detectable for some reason, could you drop some step by step on how you went about using Cheat Engine to lock fov in S8:P? Or a link to somewhere that does the same (google turned up nothing specific, and the tutorial on how to hack Pinball lead me to crashing the game as mentioned above).

At this point I've essentially abandoned playing the game since TimeGate's official board response is "some people might think it is unfair to see more than others, and we are worried about how bad our animations might look at 90 versus 70 fov, not to mention think of how bad the game will perform showing all those extra polygons on the edges of the screen!" (I paraphrase, obviously). You can see the thread here: http://forums.timegate.com/showthread.php?t=20744

That response leads me to believe they won't ever bother to fix it. So if I have to "cheat" to play the game at all, I think I'll actually do that. At least for the length of time the game holds my interest.

I don't have much faith they'll do anything about it.

If you check the other pages it shows progress.

TimeGate has announced they are going to add the ability to alter FOV in .ini files in an upcoming patch. I am shocked, but optimistic.

Press release or it didn't happen.

"Announced" was the wrong word. More like "posted on their forums via a community manager" which, as you intimate, is not the same thing.

Page 8, halfway down: http://forums.timegate.com/showthread.php?t=20744&page=8

We have read posts by some players in the PC Community requesting the ability to configure Field of View (FOV) settings in Section 8: Prejudice. In response to this feedback, we are working on a patch that will allow players to configure FOV through a .ini file.
