you might want to precise want brand is "cheapo" if that's at all possible
since not every 550W power supply out there can really output 550W

I was using a Viotek v1055 550w.

I think it could be caused by ATI powerplay and a problem with the driver and 2D clock settings at non stock 3D clocks.

When one display monitor is connected on the 5800 series and the card is in 2D mode the card is downclocked to 157Mhz core and 300Mhz memory.

When 3 displays are connected the 2D clocks are raised to 400Mhz core and 1000 Mhz memory.

If the default 3D clocks are changed in MSI afterburner or ATI overdrive to anything other than the cards default 3D clocks the 2D clocks no longer get set to 400 and 1000 with 3 displays but go down to 157 core 300 Mem.

Most of the black screens with displayport happen for me at times when the GPU could be adjusting clocks like when watching videos, starting games, surfing websites with flash content etc.

Creating profiles with MSI afterburner and making sure one of them is default clocks so the correct 2D clock settings are used in 2D mode can help.

This doesn't completely cure the problem for me but does reduce it. I think a complete cure could be forcing 2D clocks and 3D clocks to be the same so the card doesnt change states.

Stock 5850 3D clocks sets 400 core 1000 Mem 2D


Non stock 3D clocks sets 157 core 300 Mem 2D

real output for this seems to be 300W, no wonder it had problems

as a rule of thumb one shall NEVER EVER buy a power supply of an unknown brand.

going OCZ 1000W was probably a bit over the top but at least you shouldn't have a problem anymore :lol:


edit: maybe I should precise that +12V is where major power draw comes from in a computer

I have been using a 1KW OCZ proxstream all along its not to do with power.

I noticed it got worse after I messed with overdrive.

Yes and this is when the 2D clocks go lower than they should.

I brought this up with the ATI development engineer, Dave Baumann, on Oct. 15th when my 3rd monitor started going wonky:

He had no helpful suggestions because at the time this was a new issue.

I'm running an XFX 5870 in eyefinity with 3x LG 22" monitors, all DVI-D, with one Dell/Bizlink active adapter. Guess which one is cutting in and out. I have been on Dell's RMA list for 3 weeks now, the part is backordered. I've tried the adapter with 3 different DVI cables, plugged it into a 1A wall adapter, played with most of my 3 monitor's settings, and even gone from Vista to Windows 7, and the problem persists with no pattern. Sometimes it works all day, most times it doesn't. Turning the monitor on and off doesn't do anything.

Could there be a common setup problem? A hardware combo that causes this, or a specific brand of Eyefinity card? Please respond with your setup, this could shed some light on the situation. Whether or not your adapter/card works or it blinks as discussed, post your setup so we can compare:

Mine is:
CPU: Q6600 @ 3.15GHz
MOBO: EVGA 680i mobo
PSU: Corsair 850W
VIDEO: XFX brand 5870 stock
ADAPTER: Dell DPtoDVI adapter (Bizlink)
MONITORS: 3x LG 22" monitors, the model escapes me
FAILURE: Yes, blinking on/off randomly, random intervals

I've finally had enough of this issue, so i've ordered a Dell U2410 displayport enabled monitor to see if that helps (I accept that this is an expensive way of testing this theory!).

My Samsung monitor has been getting worse lately, sometimes only staying on for a few minutes.

I've tried all of the ideas mentioned on this thread, but none have worked.

At least this will tell me if the problem is with the card or software.

for the record I have:

Intel core i7 920 processor running at 3.6ghz
Sapphire Radeon HD5850
3 x Samsung T240 24'' monitors (at the moment).
Asus P6TDeluxe v2 motherboard
6gb Corsair dominator 1600mhz ram
Corsair 850w power supply
Accell DP to DVI active adaptor

Oh, what a surprise, my monitor's gone off as I write this!

I personally think this is a definitely a software issue, for the following reason:

I have been testing all sorts of setups with X-Plane 9, and when certain aircraft are loaded in, the software struggles and then the DP monitor starts blinking. Eventually these particular planes crash the video driver, when I return to the desktop and kill X-Plane by task manager, the display stops blinking almost immediately.

My DP monitor is rock solid at all other times and when I avoid those particular aircraft with 3D modelling problems.

Also, if you want to start recording setups, might be worth noting what driver people are using also:

CPU: Q8300
MOBO: AUS P5K-SE
PSU: 600W
VIDEO: Sapphire brand 5850 stock
DRIVER: Have to check, am at work
ADAPTER: Apple with CE cable
MONITORS: 3x ViewSonic VX2240w 22" monitors
FAILURE: Only during X-Plane with aircraft that have 3D modelling issues

Hmmm... interesting... 2 replies and already 3 different adapters, 2 makes and 2 models of Eyefinity card, and all the same problem! Keep it coming guys!

Ok, I've connected up my displayport monitor and have been playing games, switching eyefinity on and off, surfing the internet and watching video, for the last 4hrs.

The monitor has not shown a fault once.

I have NEVER managed to stay in triple screen mode this long before.

I hate to say it, but it seems that the problem lies with a combination of DP to DVI adapter and certain displays. Clearly it works for some people, but not for others.

I don't think the adaptor or monitor is to blame (just a hunch).

for reference I'm using windows 7 (64 bit) and CCC 9.10.

I see that they have just updated the website to version 9.11

I will keep you posted if anything changes.

UPDATE: just tried CCC 9.11 and everything is still ok
