The "new" 186.24 driver (released 6th July):
http://downloads.guru3d.com/

For Vista and Win7. Tried the 64bit Vista driver, it works like the 190 series drivers, ie 5040x1050 works at low refresh rates (got upto 55hz with this one). Higher rates either fail completely or dont pass nVidias Custom Res validation test.

The 190series drivers (or "something else") was causing horrible performance in Fallout3, which is why I went looking at these, saw them within the first 5min of their release on Guru3D! Initial performance in Fallout with the 186.24 driver is that its much, much faster than the 190 range. As in visibly, not some benchmark number.0

EDIT: Also seems to work in DX10 mode.

Thanks, sounds promising.
I'll get it from Nvidia's site. Too much crap on guru3d for me, lol.

Generally Guru3D links to Betas that arent on official sites yet. 186.24 doesnt seem to be even on nVidias beta page.

Thanks

If it doesn't turn up at nvidia's site sometime soon, I may try to get it from guru3d. I just hate it when sites do like they do. I click to download the driver and it sends me to pages with Driver Robot, and other (probable) spyware programs. I'm never sure if I am downloading the driver I want, or some crap guru3d thinks I need. So I tend to avoid sites like that.

I know what you are saying, but Guru3d has been around ages. I get no popups, spyware or anything from that site. They are primarily a review site, not a hosting site.

Just click download, click ok on the disclaimer then select mirror to download from

After a nightmarish 2hrs, I can confirm the latest official nVidia drivers, 186.18 WHQL, are working at 55Hz 5040x1050 only on the desktop. Im testing my girlfriends GTX260 SLI setup (as one of the cards may be broken) in my PC and "what did work now doesnt" in regards custom resolution settings. Took a lot of driver installs and reboots to get one that worked.

The oddity in the 186.18 drivers is they will add the mode but it doesnt appear in the Windows Resolution control (ie you cannot change to it) until you open up the Monitor properties and untick "Hide Modes this Monitor cannot display". :x Still doesnt work properly in anything other than the desktop however.

EDIT: Updated, couldnt reliably get the nV CP to add the resolution in a manner that was seen by games, only the desktop.

No dice for me. It may be that my monitors don't really like 55Hz. I'm going to stick with 182.50 until I finish my benchmarking. Then I may move up...
