I still don't like the frame rates I'm seeing on bench tests of some games at 2560x1600 using a single top shelf GPU.

The nice thing about 2560x1600 is that it's simple double the dimensions of 1280x800 - if a game runs really really badly at 2560x1600... use 1280x800 and turn on some AA. :D

I know what you mean, though. 2560x1600 is quite a high res for most cards, even now. Imagine running it on a 8800GTX - that wasn't a slow card either! :)

Vroshnak - awesome about the 3008. I want one myself. :D

[quote]I went for the Dell 3008. Dell has $300 off on it right now, plus if you go to the site through ebates.com you get 4% back.

So now everything is ordered! Hooray!

OMG 3008 is going to make you Jiizz in your pants!!!!

Funny video, I'll have to rewatch it on the new monitor when it gets here!

Well, I could always spring for another GTX 285 for SLI, I hear the card scales pretty well. But that's not really an option for a while.

And prepare to park yourself across the room on the couch with a whopping dot pitch of .5048. I don't call that nice.

Then again, those that play the high end hardware game should know full well going into it what it takes to drive it and prepare for it. It's just sad that to do so well you have to get a dual GPU card and have the finicky quad SLI/Xfire as an upgrade path. Unless of course you want to go Tri SLI/Xfire and lose all your PCI slots.

I think 2048x1152 on anything up to 27" will be a good compromise, esp if more games support it and it comes in IPS flavors. Better yet it's 16:9 aspect ratio.

Eh, I have lots of memories of playing things like TIE Fighter and Command and Conquer (at 320x200!) on a 21" CRT when I was round a friends (before I owned a PC at all) so it's not 'park myself over the other side of the room' style gaming. That was playing SNES games on his jaw-droppingly-enormous SD CRT telly.

Tri-SLI seems almost as picky as Quad, and the same with Tri/Quad Crossfire. Really, aside from benching... two cards is the max before cons start outweighing pros.

Update

The computer came together perfectly. I love this case much more than the Antec Nine Hundred I had before, I feel like I have more space. Also the power supply on the bottom thing that Antec does makes sense weightwise but means you have a long way to go with those main power cables.

30" 2560x1600 is beautiful. I do like this more than 5040x1050. My old games are like brand new experiences. Crysis runs great (although I can't have the shadows at "very high").

The Dell 3008WFP monitor has a "bright pixel" near the center of the screen thats always shines bright blue as long as the monitor is on. It took me a while to notice it, but once you do you find yourself looking for it all the time. I called tech support and after an being transfered four times, and being on the phone over an hour, they did offer to send me a replacement, and prepaid shipping on the faulty montior back to Dell. So that's good, I'm just waiting for the new monitor to show up.

MORE UPDATE

The other monitor got here. Tonight I'll have two 30" monitors. Any ideas what I should do with this brief moment of glory?

Great news that they'll send you a replacement. 2x30" wow... you could make some badass widescreen wallpapers of babes for my site. I wish I had 30" so badly.

Antec P190 I've got and it's the best, Antec make good cases.

That's exactly what I'm thinking, and I plan to really only leave dual SLI with single GPU cards as an upgrade path. I want to just start with one, fast dual slot GPU. That's part of why I'll probably stay at 1920x1200 or better yet, 1920x1080. It's also because I plan to integrate all my gear for gaming, Movies, TV etc into one display this time around, which means not going any larger with the display than I can tolerate from a desktop distance.

Nice, Vroshnak. :)

Not sure I totally understand, Frag - you mean you're gonna have one system do absolutely everything? I've tried that in the past... it's OK, to a point... but usually ends up failing for me. Constantly swapping stuff around drives me mad. It's bad enough I can't just leave my G25 set up all the time - one reason why I've barely touched a racing game for a last couple of months. :| Any house I own myself is gonna have to have one room entirely dedicated to computers.
