I meant I find AutoMKV's interface a complicated mess.

There's no individual settings. It's all mashed together. If I were to make an interface, it would probably be just for x264 only and provide simple, easy, organized choices.

Yeah I have a feeling MeGUI doesn't try to oversimplify the process as much by bunching settings together like that, which may in someways be actually more complex. It's probably more popular still with the more script savvy users, but from from I've read you do have to know more to use it vs AutoMKV.

As popular as x264 has been and for such a long time, it's kind of surprising there isn't more GUIs out there to configure it, and none I know of with a built in viewer like VirtualDub. Then again VDub is more of a minimalist editor than mere GUI.

So Dopefish, have you made any progress putting together an x264 profile for AutoMKV? I'm beginning to doubt those claims of better image quality at half the file size.

I haven't gotten around to it yet. I've been getting caught up in my widescreen fixer and working on my UT3 map.

Also, I wouldn't necessary say half the size, but I guarantee you 100% that you can get a better picture quality with a smaller filesize. It may not be half, and it will most likely vary, but you can get a better picture with a smaller size always. Don't judge x264 quality based on AutoMKV. :)

When I finish my map, I'm going to do some fly-through videos for it, and I'll encode several different versions of various qualities. If you want, I could probably upload a raw version so you could play around with various settings.

Yeah I was wondering if x264 isn't as efficient when using a GUI like AutoMKV. It is however an even more minimalist GUI than VirtualDub. I noticed Xvid definitely yields much better results in VDub than with full featured editors.

I cannot comment on results via raw scripting like you do though. However it's looking so far like x264 may struggle more when used inside such a program than Xvid does, and that is something that definitely applies to most users if so.

I still get slightly better results with x264 though, but I'd like to see if I can kick it up a notch. It may be that I'm comparing an Xvid clip that's compressed about as far as it can be without showing noticeable signs of quality degradation.

I wouldn't necessarily say x264 struggles. It's the options that AutoMKV uses, and/or the settings that people really don't know about or understand.
