All DFI X38 and X48 motherboards are affected by this issue. As far as I know, mobo's using chipsets other than those two are fine.

Quite.

Interestingly, no other mobo manufacturer has this issue. Only DFI have managed to tweak the BIOS to the point of breaking X2 support. And they seem to be in no hurry to fix it.

Been browsing "pro" reviews and benchmark results, still no clear idea of how a single 4870 X2 performs compared to two GTX 280s in SLI... (It's amazing how quite a lot of these folks can test high-end GPUs over dozens of games and/or resolutions while using E8200s or Q6600s CPUs, then draw their conclusions and give advice to serious gamers. Ever heard of CPU bottleneck, or the weight of multi-GPU solutions over the system's resources, you morons ??)

I for one think comparing a dual-GPU card to a dual single-GPU cards setup makes some sense. Both solutions (coupled with recent, beefy CPUs) were supposedly designed for playing at very high res with max settings. The price and platform are details as long as you can't directly compare performance. And even though swapping a SLI setup for a dual-GPU card may not seem to be the best upgrade path, those numerous Xbox ports usually feared by nvidia and cherished by Ati are blurring any prognostics imho. Dang, guess I'll have to buy one of those cards and do the testing myself !!

I am working on getting the kit so that I can test my 9800GX2 against a GTX280 and GTX280 in SLI

I got a question, what kind of CPU would I need to not bottleneck this GPU, cause I'm still going with my Q6600.

Or 2 4780 X2's what CPU you think that would need? Nehalem? =p

You don't just bottleneck a GPU with an insufficiently clocked CPU; it totally depends on the type of games/settings/resolutions you use, as well as RAM etc.

Going for 3 GHz is a safe bet, the rest depends on the games. A Q6600 is no hardcore gamer stuff, but don't get me wrong, it doesn't suck.

Test your games in different resolutions with different settings, if framerates don't change : blame your CPU ! Otherwise, just don't ;)

I think the 'thing' with the Q6600 is that for overclockers it's an easy way to get the quad extreme 3ghz+ at a fraction of the cost.

I went the easier route and just got a stock 3ghz dual though, overclocking is for those that don't mind unstable systems and pockets to replace fried components. I lack both.
