The tools main purpose is to dynamically alter the detail settings to maintain a certain framerate. The FOV stuff was added later.

Oblivion has a counterpart that is called Streamline and also does the FOV changes.

So far the FPS optimizer causes even more 'random stop to load' problems as I already had just running morrowind with a registry tweak for 1920x1080.

The fov itself is just fine without the tool and performance is better, in my case anyways. The only difference in fov is how close you are to yourself in 3rd person view as I play it, not sure how it affects 1st person since I don't use it. Proportionnally speaking though, the game does adjust to a wide res, it doesn't stretch.

The game is Vert - without the FOV tools. So yes it is playable.

You can adjust the minimum frame rate in the optimizer and it will be less noticiable. You can also disable the FPS part and just use the FOV fix if you desire. Just uncheck the boxes under view.

No the 'random load stops' problem I'm experiencing is only made worse, but it's not really a fps problem as such as far as I can tell. It's more like the game itself is no buffering sufficient data in a progressive manner and constantly has to stop and load entire areas. A few times it stopped and eventually crashed too. I haven't had time to play around with it and see if one of the few small mods I put in screwed up, the warnings file doesn't show anything.

Are you saying turning off the FPS made the problem worse?

Sound like a cell loading problem. My older machine used to pause on occasion for the loading. There was an ini tweak I used to change the loading behavior. It was longer loads that happened less, or something like that. 8)

EDIT - You most likely won't get any warnings unless the mods are looking for an older esm or you have a mod looking for a scripter program like Morrowind enhanced.

I haven't messed with the fps tool much, maybe seeing less fog makes it seem like it's causing more stop&loads, not sure. Happen to know where to go about looking for that tweak? I figure if I can run the thing at 64xSS sli FSAA I should be able to run it without constant loading.

EDIT - This as well.

Thank you very much, that gamefaq especially seems to have exactly what I need, the buffering and all that I think is the problem. I'll post back once I've tried some/all of those settings.

No native support for widescreen. Download the Morrowind FPS Optimizer. The version I am using is static 1.96a.

Please note the CORRECT URL for the FPS Optimizer: http://www.lowgenius.net/post/2008/05/23/Morrowind-FPS-Optimizer.aspx I had a redirect page up at the old URL for a couple of years, but looking at my site logs now this seems to be the only place left on the 'net that's still using the old URL.

It's amazing to me that I still get several hundred downloads a month of this file. How many ten year old games are still that popular, really? This one was definitely ahead of its time.

Thanks for stopping by, everyone :)
