Okay, I have a solution...

Use Mozilla Firefox

I loaded up my wife's new laptop. It has a 14" widescreen at 1280x800. Using IE, the forum went too wide, past the native res. I loaded it in Firefox, and it limits it just fine.

I don't want to artifically limit the forum to 1280, for those people who have wider displays. Using Firefox will allow everyone to be happy. Also, Firefox is much safer and is just much better all the way around.

I'll try that, thank you.

About Contra,
The responsetime is 16ms for my TV.
I know that there exists 8ms lcd monitors, but I really don't have any problem with ghosting and other known problems with LCD.
I just put V-Sync on at all time

It is too wide. My windows resolution is 1680x1050. But I'm a multitasker, I don't run any applications full-screen. The standard for web design is 1024x768, so I keep my browser window around 1100 pixels wide. This is also a suitable width to allow a second application to fill the rest of my monitor.

The thing is, the only thing making the page too wide is the banner graphic. It's pointless to force the page to be wider than it needs to be, all it does is annoy people. Like me.

Did you answer the poll we held about the res members surfed at? 'Cause most people said they were using 1280-wide windows/monitors or bigger... which is why the site is designed around that width. :)

I guess my point is, it's not designed around that. The only element which is specifically designed for that width is the top portion with the header graphic. That graphic could so very easily be made narrower and nothing would be lost.

Not exactly, the site is designed to remain as consistent a width as possible - in all areas. Check out the screenshot section. I shrunk that as narrow as I could get it in Safari, and measured it with SmallScreenX. It came out to about 1160 wide. That takes into account the left column, the central column layout and the screenshot itself. The screenshots are 840 pixels wide.

One of the reasons we ran the poll, was so I could know how wide to make the "non forum" parts of the site, when we did the last redesign. Resolutions of 1280 or greater allowed us to continue to run the screenshots at 840x525

I went ahead and cut the banner down a little bit. I was able to take 60 pixels out, so you should be close to your 1100 res.

You can view the site at less than 1280, but not everyone surfs at as small of a window resolution as you do.
