Thought I would start this thread as it sort of came up that "who uses it these days" in another thread and rather than carry out that discussion there where it's about the game itself it may be better to do it here.

So I guess the point is to find some stats of who uses 4:3/5:4 compared to 16:10 and 16:9

take the Steam details from this like to get :-

  • 4:3 / 5:4 = 18.68%
  • 16:10 = 25.95%
  • 16:9 = 53.77%
  • Other = the rest

Okay 18% is a small number but it's still a lot of people, then look at web users using "square" and you get 33%

These stats aren't confirmed and are taken off the wiki as is but this is what they say:-
Quote:
Notes
The Steam user statistics were gathered from users of the Steam network in its hardware survey of May 2012.
The web user statistics were gathered from visitors to three million websites, normalised to counteract geolocational bias. Covers the five-month period from January to May 2012.
The numbers are not representative of computer users in general.

Using this I would say it still needs to be considered but to what means!

Well i've used a 4:3 CRT within the last 3 Days. I also had a 20" 1600x1200 this time last year, but that 20" was used in concert with a 30".

Was just thinking on this earlier with the discussion around Papo & Yo. Check out my comments here. Also, I gave a quick look at the current steam HW numbers and it's more like 9% now.

(Edit, moving this to "Site News & Suggestions", since it fits there better.)

IMHO 4:3 is outdated. but thats just my personal opinion because i don't have a 4:3 screen anymore!

maybe we should create a Poll on the Webpage "Is 4:3 Gaming still a concern?"

But what should WSGF do if it's not a concern anymore? How do the ratings work? start at 16:10 or stay with 4:3 as the base? There are so many things to consider but with 16:10 or 9 becoming the norm (9% are on 4:3 according to steam which skip mentioned) what dose WSGF do with old games that were designed for 4:3 over designed for wide (although I've still seen new games which are shockingly bad).

Should there be an option to say "designed for". What happens if like Papo & Yo they do something not in the norm like vert- through "standard" res then when it gets to eyefinity go Hor+, should there be an extra option on the eyefinity/surround section to say Hor+ or Vert-

Aussie and I chatted quite a bit about this tonight. We have made a couple of changes to the database, in light of this type of issue (Papo & Yo isn't the first).

1 - We've added Vert+ to the options of "screen change" (now called "Behavior"). It will be used primarily for Widescreen grading, and games will be able to get a grade of Gold.
2 - We've also added additional behavior fields for multi-mon, 21:9 ultra-wide and 4k. This will allow us ot set up grading decision trees based on the unique behavior of each display type, and not set a baseline behavior and use tweaks to fix grading anomalies.
3 - I'm asking Brett to copy all the values from the WS behavior into MM and 21:9. We'll then spot check games with Silver WS and MM Gold grades for tweaking.
4 - We'll adjust the grading routines for MM to use the new field, and set up grading routines for 21:9 and 4k.
5 - I'll set up the new fields to show in the output template file for a game database entry.
