Well that was annoying and damn odd, I needed to burn some time while my next video encoded so I decided to setup and use my blu-ray drive as a blu-ray player. Having installed the software that came with my drive (PowerDVD 9) I tried running my Avatar blu-ray disk in it, only be to told my drivers were not compatible, ie 11.4.

Ran the Blu-ray advisor that came with the drive, which failed on both drivers and on HDCP, did some digging, found someone that said he updated the advisor which then told him his system was fine, so he updated PowerDVD and got it working.

So I updated the Advisor, ran it, passed on everything, looked on Cyberlink web site, found they don't provide patches for software that comes with drive, and it advises I use the inbuilt update system which will only direct me to PowerDVD11 Ultra for £39.99.

So started the download for the retail patch anyway, put my blu-ray disk back in the drive while I waited, and the bloody thing started, the only think I did was update the advisor which shouldn't of been required to play in the first place. :?

This is why I rip my blu-rays... and use alternative software to cyberlink (which I abhor).

I think its all just a matter of cost.

I can't wait to be able to backup files on huge Blu Ray dics but thats not practicle if they are 1 bucks each.

That's true but why start behind the curve out of the box. A HD5700 level, running Open CL in a reduced voltage would control heat and allow for longer life span of the unit. This is still within the parameters of using well tested and tried products. IBM does series of 64 bit, multi core RISC chips that would be nice to see in the unit but that would be well outside the purview of Nintendo's design ethos.

The GPU in the 360 is, what, a unified shader version of the X1800?

Even a 4000 series GPU (presuming die-shrink to keep it cooler) will utterly obliterate the 360 or PS3 GPUs.

I imagine that we will end up using a digital distribution method for games before we can use blu rays for games. In order to handle some of the possible high resolution textures, we may need something much bigger than even blu ray discs (possibly multiple blu rays), especially for applications using alot of ram.

I'll admit it's kind of time to do so (Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim could be a possible candidate for a blu ray).
