Hello WSGF community! Been a long time since iv posted here. I am looking at upgrading my Dell 2405FPW 24" (1920x1200) monitor to a new 27" monitor and I was looking for advice. This new monitor will be used about 50/50 for work and gaming. I play anything from twitch shooters (not that those really exist anymore :(( ) to racing games and anything in between. I would consider myself a hardcore gamer (PC only) I'm at the point in my hardware cycle where I want to upgrade but I could get another year out of it and wait for the GTX700 cards. But I want to upgrade something and the monitor seems to be the best way to go. i7 920 @ 3.4Ghz 2x GTX275 (896MB) SLi 12 GB DDR3 1600 I know my current graphics cards can’t push a 2560x1440 rez very well in current games. So I had a few questions about that. How does 1080p content look on a 1440p screen? I might be running games at that rez until I do a full system rebuild. As a hardcore (FPS) gamer I’d love to play on a 120/144 Hz screen but as someone who also works from home id love 1440p rez. I just don't know what to do. I’ve been going back and forth for about 2 months now and at the point of just ordering both and sending back the one I dont want or just a 30" screen. but id end up not getting any of them if it came to that. im just limited in my experience in both 120hz and 1440p and don't really have a way to view/use these monitors before I buy. So to the owners of 1440p monitors how does running content at the screens nonnative rez look? Has it gotten better than screens from 2005? and can you get most games to run at 1440p? To the owners of 120 hz/144hz monitors how does 1080p look on a monitor that big? Are the pixels noticeably big? Thanks |

You can get a 120Hz 1440P screen, the 2B Catleaps can run at that res. Using later nV cards, I have seen them run up to 132Hz. Realistically your choices at 27" are Dell U2713HM, PB278Q Asus, S27A850T Samsung, ZR2740 HP and the catleaps. There is a viewsonic one also, I forget the name. The HP, Dell and Catleaps use the same type of panel, IPS, the Asus and Samsung and Viewsonic use PLS (Samsungs IPS). One thing you need to bear in mind is that these modern 27" are 16:9 ratio, not 16:10 like your 2405, so you will not gain any height at all (physically), only width of screen. You could do a lot worse than the Asus or the Dell, the Samsung has 30ms input lag, the Dell about 22ms and the Asus about 17ms, making the Asus the best of the bunch. The HP has less lag, but has no on screen display, other than brightness all other alterations must be made in your graphics control panel. |

I have the Dell (2011 version) and I heartily recommend it. When I save enough cash I am thinking of getting a couple of cheaper 1920x1080 27 mons to do surround with. so 2560x1440 for single screen and 5760x1080 for surround. a few less pixels for my GPUs to push and the Dell still looks pretty darn good at 1920x1080 |

I ended up getting the Asus PB278Q.I love the rez/colors and I didn't really take a huge hit to my FPS in games. I don't notice any input lag either (feels the same as my 2405 at least). its a stellar monitor . its funny I didn't know how bad the colors are on TN panels tell I had them side by side. Colors are still good and accessible on my 2405 but the colors on my PLS panel are really good. I was looking at the Catleaps monitors but iv read because their response times are so high it negates the high refresh rates and in some cases really bad input lag. Also I wanted a monitor with a warranty from a company i know and somewhat trust. with all that said I do miss 16:10 but I know ill get used to it and I really want to test/see games on a 120hz monitor just to see what its like and to see the other side of this coin. I also kind of wish I would have saved more money for a 30" panel. Does anyone have any recommendations on color setting they use for the P8278Q to make this thing look even better? |

Every panel is different, so you can do it by eye, give yourself confortable brightness levels in a reasonably lit room, and then make sure white looks white. Beyond that would you need a calibrator |
