Hi everybody,

I have a friend who is thinking about introduce himself to a widescreen world. The system would be formed by 3 monitors U2711 (2560x1440) so the resolution would be 7680x1440.

What do you boys think about that ultra resolution?

He is thinking right now in 2 GTX 670 4GB model. The question is... are the 4GB card's model worth regarding that ultra wide system? or would be the standard 2GB model enough?

At the moment, he wants to buy two cards to mount that SLI, but he is not discarting the idea of getting a 3rd card.

In the other hand, he has a 2500K CPU (Sandy Bridge) and mounting that SLI would result in SLI 8/8 plus PCI 2.0.

Do you think that's worth the effort to get a new socked based to get SLI 16/16 plus PCI 3.0?
I've heard that performance SLI 8/8 & PCI2.0 VS SLI 16/16 & PCI3.0 has few improvement at this moment. But i would hear some opinion of you guys.

So basically the doubts right now are
- GPU 2GB model or 4GB model
- Socket Sandy Bridge 8x/8x with PCIE 2.0 or Newest Socket with 16x/16x with PCIE 3.0

I apreciate your opinions :)

mhmm yeah, 7680*1440 isn't standard size, mainly because the monitors are to expensive and cuz the resolution IS really big!

You need 4GB model for sure! Or you're gonna hit Vram Limit around 4x AA depending on game. And you don't want your Vram to limit your system in 2 Years just because you saved 70 bucks per card!

IMHO its a waste to use two such cards on a PCI-E 2.0 boards on 8 Lanes! Sure it would work! And there are a lot people who will tell you "Its only 2-5% Performance drop! Dont worry about it". Well i would worry about it!
Check out that test for HD7970 8x PCI-E 2.0 = 4GB/s = 4x PCi-E 3.0 !

I'd go for a LGA2011. 3930k or 3820. 2x 16xPCI-E 3.0 Lanes ! No problems! For TriSLI you'de get16x/8x/8x but as you see in the chart, 8x PCI-E 3.0 is *nearly* no loss!
You might want to Try 2 GPU's at first, and then buy a third if you're unhappy with the FPS.

P.S if you wanna try out how much Performance you will get on 7680*1440 resolution you could try that tool

Thanks for your reply.

Ok, so 4GB card will be a must. What you sayid its very true, 70 bucks per card its worth that money instead of regret to not buy it later 2 years.

That PCI 3.0 it's interesting, but buy a new socket would increase 500 bucks (mobo + cpu). I tell to him your opinion, and he will decide to do.

So very thanks :)

PD: Interesting program you made for testing. I'll check :)
