Post subject:  Newbie Hardware Question

I am in the process of building a new computer and want to add two Asus ROG Matrix 5870 GPU's. If I am using three 24" monitors and want to use Eyefinity, am I getting any benefit from having 2 GPU's? Do I run one with DisplayPort for the center monitor and DVI the other two?

Any suggestions on the best setup using these components would be a big help. Cheers.

Don't buy two 5870's, buy 5970.

I was thinking of the 5970 but I've been reading a lot of posts about problems with the dual chips in these. I guess that Catalyst just isn't updated properly yet for them. I just need to understand what benefit I would be getting with two 5870's in Crossfire if I'm only using three monitors. Would they compound the power or would it not make a difference?

Well if you read Ibrin's reviews (check them out on the front page) plus the general feedback in those posts you should get a feel. I know for the eyefinity6, having it crossfired increased most games frame rates and other things dramatically.

No problems here with the 5970, 5870 in Crossfire is more powerful unless you OC the 5970 to 5870 level.
Be prepared to do some serious cooling then..

That second GPU onboard sure gives you extra eyecandy!

And No, you cannot use the DVI and DP port on the second card in case of 5870 Crossfire (if you want to use it in Eyefinity).
Not sure if you asked this, but heres my answer anyways..

Thanks for the help. I will Crossfire two 5870's. I am planning to water cool and will have two radiators so I should be OK. Cheers.
