the LED just allows for 3 different things:
1) Side-lit not backlit, which makes the screen far more thinner than before
2) Local Dimming, where a portion of the screen that is meant to be black is dimmed to make it look darker
3) more vibrant colour (with use of Red Green and Blue LED's, not white LED's).
Generally LED's at the cheaper point on monitors is being used for 1, but the technology allows 1, 2 and 3 to be possible, as long as you want to pay for it.
