I have waited a long time, and decided not to buy the 22" Viewsonic/Samsung 120Hz LCDs.

Now that we have the Alienware OptX & Acer GD235Hz.. I would like to ask which is the better buy for competitive FPS gaming?

Of course I would rather have the better response/input times over color.. and price difference is not an issue. I doubt I will be using the 3D feature, so let's keep that out of this debate for the FPS King of monitors.

The Alienware is advertised at 3ms GTG and the Acer is displayed at 2ms GTG... I don't trust these numbers, and I have searched so long..and haven't found any reviews comparing the two.

Can anyone help me out here?

I know the Alienware has an advantage on the Acer..when it comes to swivel, and height adjustment! So that might be important, because with TN panels I know I need to be sitting in a certain spot to get the best view of the monitor.

All comments welcome!

Thanks in advance!

or should i consider saving a good $200 and using that money for a new computer peripheral setup: headphones, mouse, mousepad, new fans, and TIM.

I don't mind 60HZ LED or non LED for Bad Company 2... it's my Counter-Strike 1.6 competitive gameplay in leagues that I am worried about... 120 FPS is no problem for me in that game, but like I mentioned earlier I doubt I would be scoring 120FPS in Bad Company 2 @ 1920x1080 :(

What do you guys suggest?

The input lag on either of those listed is not fantastic. Unless you are sensitive to the motion of 60Hz screens then I would probibly try and get the lowest response time screen that you can.

If you are talking about having a machine to run at 120 FPS in CS, I take it you are already using the CPL mousefix tweaks, running the mouse at 1000Hz etc?

you can see here the Asus MS246H gives only 6.9ms "input lag" on average. The Acer you detail (according to this http://3dvision-blog.com/tag/acer-gd235hz-review/) has around 15ms input lag extra then the Viewsonic, which has 14ms according to the graph.

If you analyse it on a frame by frame basis, the time taken to show something new on the screen could be 6.9ms + 16.7ms = 23.6ms on the Asus.

Contrast this with 14ms + 15ms + 8.3ms = 37.3ms

IMO going to these high end 120Hz screens doesn't make a great deal of sense for the moment *unless of course the 15ms figure is wrong*.

If you can feed 120fps constant to the screen then you will get better motion from a 120Hz screen, but there will be a lag between things. With the 60Hz screen, the lag is very small, but this is increased with the near stone age 17ms refresh time for the screen.

Down-sides to both technologies, but I would say for serious gaming you should be fine with both, they both have their own merits. If you can put up with 40ms lag, which is nearly 2 whole frames plus input lag for the Asus, then go for it. Once the 40ms lag is "gone" (by this I mean the lag has and is still happening, it will not be figured in for every frame), you will get a refresh every 8.3ms which should make the movement smoother.

My current monitor: 7 year old Dell 17" CRT 1280x1040@60Hz + 6 year old Samsung SyncMaster 191t (one of the first SM monitors!!!)

As you see I have a very crappy monitor setup!!!

System Specs:
AMD 965 C3 3.91GHz
G.Skill Ripjaws 2x2GB 1600MHz DDR3
2x ATI (reference ftw) XFX 5770s 1000/1400MHz 1GB GDDR5
Samsung SpinPoint F3 500Gb (single platter hd)
Asus Crosshair III Formula (2.400MHz NB)
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700w PSU
Sony OptiArc
Cooler Master Storm Scout

I doubt I will get 120 FPS constant in BC2 which means a 120Hz monitor will not be worth it, even if I wait for the 27" or LED backlit 120Hz monitors!

I don't think I will be going pro in counter-strike, since my team is going down hill :( If we make WCG qualies..then I'll rethink that comment!

I was hoping someone could give me some ideas... Should I consider a 60Hz LCD with great response times/input lag? Should I consider spending a tad more and going LED?

I was thinking about the Dell Dell SP2309W 23" 2MS GTG 2048 x 1152 resolution! I figured a smaller screen with a higher resolution would be better than a 26" 1920x1200 Acer monitor.... hmmm.

Will my GPU setup struggle even harder in BC2 with that resolution? What would you guys do? I'm sure I can wait 2-3 years to get a godly computer/surround sound/water cooled setup..but for now... I really have $400 for a monitor...... but I need a new headphone, mouse, and mousepad!!!! So I guess 120Hz will not be worth it...and if I go 60Hz I can easily buy new peripherals!

2048x1152 is only roughly 55000 more pixels, not much to worth consideration over a 1920x1200 display, in terms of performance loss.

the LED Technology is great at what it does, which seems to be 1) reducing the panel thickness 2) reducing energy consumption.

I have not seen it make any significant differences to the black levels or to the colour accuracty, this is partly because the best LED backlighing is of Red, Green and Blue, not these white LED sidelights we have at the moment. But to go to the RGB LED Backlights is very expensive.

I would say that a good quality 60Hz monitor will be fine, I find the lag between seeing things and it actually happening to be more annoying than having the "poor" motion of a 60Hz screen. I must say, when I play games, I don't look for imperfections in the motion :)

Good luck with the other things you want to buy. The Audio Technica ATH-AD700 headphones are regarded as being amazing for gaming, easy to drive and not sooo hard on the wallet, just to help with that too :)
