Hey guys, believe it or not, i'm shopping for a new monitor. I'm going back to Digital Overload next year (registration is already paid, hotel rooms are next, then train,) but realizing that while having my 24" Dell there was great, I really do need to look into something smaller and lighter for this trip (cross country). Last time my computer came back home disassembled inside it's own case, the case dented, and my monitor buttons a pain in the ass to press now. I want something I can take on the train with me and my 360. I'm going to have my own bedroom on the train for I think something like 49 hours. So I have a LOT of practice I can get in before I get to the convention and play in some of the tournaments. I'm thinking something small, but not too small... 15" to 19" range. Something relatively inexpensive but good color, contrast/brightness, and viewing angle. (I do also plan to load my 120gb drive on my box and pack on as many movies as I can fit so when i'm not gaming on the train, I have something to watch.) Preferred native resolutions: 1280x800 or 1680x1050 please. I'm looking on Newegg today and pricing out some things, but it's been a long while since i've been on the market for a monitor. I made a nice choice with this Dell 24" monitor, and I don't want to regret my next purchase either. This monitor will also become my secondary monitor here at home, aside the 24".

EDIT: Forgot to mention this is a bday present for myself. For those interested, bday is tomorrow. If you wanna chip in a few bucks towards the monitor/video card i'm looking at, send some Paypal to my username @ my username .com, literally. Cynagen at cynagen dot com.

This monitor is on sale until the end of today: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254034

That's $230, and while it seems like something that would go good, few things I gotta pick at it... Price, and I can't find any color spectrum information. I don't want a 6-bit panel. I've got an 8-bit, and I'm used to seeing colors as they are suppost to be. I'd like to avoid banding and returns as much as possible. What I'm looking for is one purchase, one shipment, done, kinda deal. Just wondering what everyone else thinks of some of these monitors. I did find an Acer monitor that fits the bill...

I'm not sure if the extra display space is really worth, (does the math on shipping and price difference,) $9.26... WTF...

Ok, the 1680x1050 goes in the cart, now a DECENT video card so I can stop choking on things like Crysis so badly... Who knows how hard SC2 will slam my machine...

It was all I could find that wasn't 1440x900. :(

http://www.viewsonic.com/products/lcddisplays/xseries/VX1962wm/

Viewsonic's page for it is above, but it doesn't mention panel type. But 5ms response time with 2ms grey-to-grey... it's gotta be a 6-bit one.

Acer. I would not, in good conscience, ever recommend any bit of Acer equipment to anyone. Ever. My experiences of Acer have been utterly abysmal. I would not wish that on anyone.

edit:

I don't trust any panel to be 8-bit if it's quoted response time is lower than... 12ms or so. But that might well just be me stuck in the past. ;)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150308 - $229 after instant savings and rebate with XFX. Think it'd be a good upgrade from my 8600GTS?

A GTX260 will be a huge upgrade from an 8600. And for $230, it's a nice price, too. 'bout the same as the cheapest 260 I can find, at £165.

Really, the only thing holding me back from a 'tweak' upgrade is the whole 'I can't be arsed' attitude I have when it comes to doing all but essential stuff at the minute.

I found an upgrade to my processor, and I wanna go with that GTX260... So I can't afford all 3. Dropping the monitor for the processor and video card upgrades, since they're dirt cheap, and my processor's socket is starting to become deprecated (you can't get my processor on newegg or any major online retailer anymore, and they're not making anything new for AM2 either, only AM2+, which incidentally my board does not support.)

Going from 2.33Ghz (barely oc) to 3.2Ghz with full 1mb L2 per core rather than 512k (it DOES make a difference), and then 8600GTS to GTX260 should be like night and day on this machine. I'm pretty sure I can pick up a monitor cheaply later on, and I should have lots more money to do so later on too, no pinching required, but I'd still be better suited for the event coming up.
