I have a Gigabyte GeForce 8400GS which uses a spdif plug that I connect to my motherboard and my box has onboard Realtek HD audio.

I'm a bit new trying to understand HDMI, never really used it till now. I guess there are some cards that don't have a spdif plug that you need to connect to the motherboard and some do?

So if your card uses the spdif then you don't see a HDMI option in the sound preferences to pick? Because all I see is the Realtek HD Audio...

Also with a card that uses the spdif, where is the HDMI audio support coming from, Realtek or Nvidia driver?

I've been playing with some different drivers, some I can get some sound but it has some static and it cuts in and out, and some other drivers nothing, also I changed my HDMI cable, that didn't do anything either...

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

These are the drivers I've tried so far;

266.58
260.99
197.45
195.62

THANKS

P.S. Between ATI & Nvidia, does one offer better HDMI support?

I believe the newer cards from both camps have their own HDMI Audio driver, and don't need the SPDIF header anymore, so I would say they are both equal on that regard. But from that respect, IMO ATi have better support for HDMI audio, far more of their cards support bit-streaming than nVidias.

I believe in your case you need an SPDIF output from your motherboard somewhere to go into the 8400, and then use the 8400 as the HDMI audio device.

This is my card a GIGABYTE GV-N84STC-512I;

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125336

So it will use the Nvidia HD driver?

Problem still is, I'm not getting good sound at all from this thing and I would of thought with at least this cheapie card I would... :(

Actually, I wonder if the card blasts out the audio it gets from the SPDIF and you use SPDIF as the playback device. Otherwise Windows wouldn't output via the SPDIF.

Really need someone with more knowledge to help out here!
