Hi all.
I am planning to build a pc for 3d surround.
I am planning on using projectors for the surround and have already purchased the acer 1130p as they are nvidia 3d ready.
I know this forum is about widescreen rather than 3d and my question is around this issue.
from reading the nvidia requirements, I know that for surround you need 2 boards in sli for the outputs but you can use a gtx 295 as it has 3 useable outputs.

I have noticed that the palit gtx 460 card also has 2 dvi and 1 vga output and wondering if this card alone could be used for surround??

the projector resolution is 800x600 so the triple screen would be 2400x600 which i assume the 460 could handle but my main question is about the fact that the card has 3 outputs.

could surround be achieved with one of these cards?

Short answer; no, you can't do Surround off one card.

The only reason that some GTX295s can do Surround from one card is that the manufacturer built the card out of the reference specs. Thus, not all GTX295s allow you to run Surround. The best rule of thumb is that SLI is required. While there are a small number of exceptions to that because of the non-reference GTX295s... they're in the vast minority.

If you're wanting Surround and 3D... a GTX295 is probably going to struggle.

thanks for the info!
sorry about the double post by the way. I saw the hardware section before seeing the 3d surround section and then thought it would make more sense to post there!

I guess there really is no way to do 3d surround on the cheap! lol

Based on the reviews / user reports ive been reading, I hardly come across anyone using 3d projectors. I thought it would be cool to go down this route as you could do away with having a bezel separating images but also to play at a lower resolution than the HD lcd monitors. That way you could reduce the cost overhead of needing to buying gtx 480s to try and drive 3 HD lcd screens!

it seems like gtx 460 sli will be more than enough to drive 2400x600 with 3d at decent frame rates.

does that sound about right?

Yeah, I doubt a GTX460 will struggle with 2400x600. It probably won't even need to worry about VRAM limitations too much. :D
