anyone running a 3x1 portrait mode in surround?
from the looks of the vids ive seen with eyefinity it looks decent. and nvidias surround website says it supports portrait, but i never tried as i have 4:3 monitors and dont see a huge benefit. But it looks to me like running 3x widescreens in portrait you would end with a aspect ratio thats not too far out of sync from what most games would expect. So i would think that alot of the games that have aspect issues would still play correctly?

anyone doing this? is it easier to get stuff running becuase of the closer aspect? does it still feel as immersive?

i have a single dell 22" wide that supports 1080. if i sold a bunch of my current stuff i bet i could come up with enough $ for 2x more... but i dont have the desk space for 3x1 landscape, so its out of the question without a full reorganization of my computing area / desk / and room.

I've bounced from 3x1 Landscape and 3x1 Portrait.

I have likes and dislikes about both set-ups. I will say it is dependent on the game I happen to be playing.

If I watch a movie on it in Landscape, the two outside monitors don't really show anything, as the movie fills the center monitor. In Portrait, the movie fills the majority of all three monitors. However, the bezels are there, and eventually I started to not like the bezels being there for TV/movie watching. I've since added a projector, and third video card to drive it, to watch movies/sports - 84" of mostly HD glory!

In games, the bezels tend to fade out, in time - you just don't notice them as much.

With landscape, obviously you get the massive side to side view of things, which is mostly useful in outdoor areas of games. Indoors (say walking through a dungeon) the walls can feel like they are closing in on you, which really isn't that bad - you KNOW you are in a dungeon.

As for portrait, I like the vertical height you gain. If you are walking through a city with arched walkways, tall buildings, etc, you get a better sense of how immense the place is.

I think I would really enjoy having 5x1 Portrait, but would have to switch to AMD cards, and buy two more monitors.

You could look into getting a triple monitor stand, like the ones advertised here - obviously more money would be needed. You could with some thinking and planning, build your own stand.

Make sure your current monitor can pivot to portrait, if going to triple monitors is something you want to try.

Also, you can search Youtube for "3x1 portrait" or "3x1 landscape" and see a lot of videos. It'll give you some idea of what to expect.

ok just tried landscape for a bit.
i have to say i really really love it.
as you said definite ups and downs, i tried a few games with centered huds and 1024 just isnt enough for text, and things are either squished or cut off. so its not really practical for stuff like that. But as far as geting the extra height and not the crazy width, im totally all for it. i love how immersive games and such feel that way, more so than in landscape.

tried out some skyrim and nfs games and loved both. skyrim was a nono cause of the text issues. but as far as gameplay i liked it better than landscape.

also it turns out my dell 1907s have TERRIBLE side viewing angles. make it impossible, the left screen is way too dark. if i sit to the right of my desk but keep the screens strait and play at an angle its great lol.

oddly enough by doing this i also found out these 1907s dont really have a good bottom up view either, but the top down view is Awesome. i think im going to get vesa stands for them and mount them upside down and move them up a little. they should look great and not have the dark spots either.

well see how it goes,
