I am running a 3 x 24" 1080 monitors currently on 2x GTX 970s and I am wondering about moving to one 21:9 3440x1440, 34" monitor in the future because of the additional pain of setting up surround for games which don't support it out of the box and the fact can't really go to Ultra at that resolution.
My question is, because 3440x1440 is 21:9 aspect ratio, not many games would support that either right? So I would probably be in the same boat unless selecting 2560x1440 + black bars (which is nasty) for games that don't support it right?
Of course looking at upgrading the GPUs also, probably a GTX 1080 (doubt it could do 3440x1400 at Ultra) or dual RX 480s and spend the difference on a freesync monitor.
What are the experiences of people running the 34" 3440x1440 res screens?

I am running 3440x1440 with a GTX 980 Ti FTW card and I have found that most of my games support it one way or another. Many natively, others using an .ini edit. I tend to run slightly older games (typically 2+ years old) and it runs very well on Ultra for lots of them. Current, cutting edge games may have more issues. A few I run in 2560x1080 mode with Ultra. Nvidia's GeForce experience is helpful in picking settings. So I think the 1080 would run pretty well except the most demanding games.

While I like my Samsung monitor and it looks great for the price, it doesn't support G-sync. I would have liked to tried out the ASUS monitors to see the benefit of G-sync monitor but I balked at the extra price (about $400 more than the Samsung).

Which monitor do you have? Yeah the ASUS ones are over a grand for the G-Sync and high refresh rates.

I bought the Samsung S34E790C 34" for $799. It got decent reviews on a few google searches I did regarding picture quality, price etc. It replaced an old Gateway 24" 1920x1200 monitor that I had. It generally got better reviews than the Dell 34" although the Dell I think is a bit cheaper.

ASUS also has a 2560x1080 model that has G-sync for around $899 if G-Sync is more important to you than the higher resolution.
