Introductory BS
Hey there :) as it may seem, this is my first post on the forum, and unfortunately it's kinda a noob question as it seems. I have used the site numerous times though, ever since I use 3 monitors (which is from the release of the ATI 5xxx series, which was like late 2009). I hope you guys forgive me for being a straight of register-and-ask-a-question guy as I'll try to be productive in helping others as well here. Problem only with hooking up with you as that most of you are american, which renders me unable to co-op or play with you as the lag will be so high for me, so I rather tend to stick to european forums/communities. However there is no community like this one, and I can understand that from a european point of view. (In america everything must be bigger, better and over-the-top, where they say you're being crazy enough when you're acting normal here. Hence the looks I get when showing my triplescreen setup, which isn't even THAT exotic if you look at the 3+1, 6x, 5x in P or other setups here on wsgf.)

Reason for this question here exactly is that I'm only getting weird looks of "why would you want to game on 3 monitors at the same time" and just people that don't know because they aren't running a multimon setup themselves, and benchmarks only benchmark on usually 1920x1200 at the highest resolution.

The real question
My HD5850 gets outdated and is just not on par with many modern games that are waaaaay too unoptimalized. I pulled the GPU to 920 mhz and the memory to 1200, but even then...ye :(,
so what card do your guys recommend that is able to run a resolution of 5760x1080 at decent settings (normal/high).

addendum: it's crazy what difference there is between games. I can run l4d2 fine in the highest settings possible on 57601080, and with high-res. texture mods, while simpler games like Guns of Icarus Online (running on Unity engine) are doing 32 fps in just a single 1080p monitor.

addendum2
: a picture of my setup, I just usually do that on every gaming/computer forum in my first post.

670 OC, 680, 7950 OC , 7970

Or if you want to spend a lot Titan, 670 4gb Sli, 7970 CF.

The choice is yours.

Thank you :) you already helped me somewhat on my findings for a new graphics card. I'm checking these three out, as beyond as quite above my point of view of "affordable".

http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/compare/ ... categorie/

When I compare the 670 to the 7970 on Anandtech, it seems a bit silly to prefer the Nvidia one over the ATI one, especially when it's worse and about €25 more expensive. Is this a valid argument, or am I just being biased on benchmarks and "isn't that the only thing to look at".

Or maybe another thing to look at. I'm getting a lot of input from others telling me to wait for the next generation Nvidia or the 9xxx ATI generation, as those will be revolutionary better as being proven in the past that after the release of a new generation consoles, PC hardware usually follows and grows massively in power. What are your opinions on that?

I'm in the same seat as you are. The 7970 GHz seems to be comparable to the GTX680, not the 670. And if you want more than 2GB VRAM then the 680 gets really expensive.

I've always been a nVidia supporter, but seeing that 2x680 4GB costs 300$ more than 2x7970 GHz 3GB I just might see if the grass is greener (red?) on the other side.

The problem seems to be with micro stuttering, which seems to appear for more AMD customers than nVidia. It seems however after reading around that it's quite easy to fix (radeonpro, adaptive vsync, limiting to 60fps etc) if one doesn't mind tinkering a bit.

Ye, it's what I experience with my current ATI HD5850 as well.

What I'm also considering is linux support. As I might need to go to linux because of A. university requires me to run quite some linux programs in the future perhaps, and B. Win8 and what will be thereafter? Would mean a shift to linux for me as well. :/ Still, prices of those nvidia's are so outrageously more expensive, and so much iffies.

I was planning on getting a 7970, but there I found this deal I couldn't refuse.

This guy had an MSI Twin Frozr 7950, and since he didn't game at all any more, he wanted to trade it in for a lowerspec + money. So I offered him my HD5850 and €170.
I just installed it, and I don't have any miniDP adapters yet, so I'm currently just running it off on 1 monitor (which is damn small if you're used to 3)
