As long as your monitor has HDMI , you should be good. The audio dongle is for surround sound or RCA output. But if your monitor has speakers and HDMI, you should be okay.

Remember that the older Xbox 360s don't have an HDMI port in the back, so depending on when you bought it you might want to check that.

I used a $5 HDMI -> DVI cable to my DVI monitor, and a $5 Xbox 360 RCA audio adapter.

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231&cs_id=1023104&p_id=2404&seq=1&format=2
http://cgi.ebay.com/Xbox-360-AUDIO-R-L-RCA-Adapter-CABLE-Gaming-Cables-/200475247602?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Video_Games_Accessories&hash=item2ead4183f2

The RCA audio plugin is small enough to fit under the HDMI plugin. It normally comes with the $40 360 HDMI kit you linked but you can buy it separately off ebay for $5 and use any HDMI or HDMI->DVI cable from monoprice for 5 bucks.

I had to get the audio adapter cuz my monitor didn't have speakers or audio out, so I used the adapter to go to my computer speakers w/RCA -> 3.5mm minijack.

I now have a monitor with HDMI, speakers and audio out so I'm able to just use a HDMI cable to my monitor then output to my computer speakers from there.
