That ADAPTER is outrageously priced, I could get 2 monitors for that price and i'm not going to be throwing away that kind of dough for just an adapter. There has to be some competition for something like this because with the prices of monitors going WAY down, more and more people are doing dual and triple displays.

I really don't think there is much other competition as it's not the largest demand for such products other than with extreme enthusiasts.

Or you could also enter the draw on these forums:

I got my first 19inch widescreen viewsonic about 6 months ago for $165 after rebate at newegg. And then got my acer widescreen 2 months ago for 180

I thought the adapter was $300?

Yeah, I kinda messed that up, but the rest of my post still stands.

There is very small market for even dual-screens, never mind triple.

This "adapter" is the best Surround Gaming solution so far. Besides, the technology behind this product is probably already patented by Matrox.

I'm not sure (see my recent post in hardware section), but isn't the new chipset 680 (like on the Asus Striker Extreme mobo etc) able to have 2 GPUs in SLI mode AND able to feed multiple monitors? AFAIK this wasn't possible with previous chipsets, but from what the internet (:s) provided me it looks this is one of the new features of this chip. The new boards also have 3 PCI-E slots (but only two fully PCI-E x16).
Anyway, feel free to disapoint me if false...but if true i think this is a better solution then the Matrox box (SLI feeding monitors directly over DVI with higher resolutions).

That would surely be a feature of the graphics card not the motherboard chipset?

But I've thought a similar thing for a while. The best solution would be for nVidia to incorporate the functionality on it's cards. You could make one of the card outputs a double connector (like some Dell desktops use) with a Y connector to connect the two outer monitors. The other card output for the central screen.

Being on the card there would be much better scope via drivers to set the resolutions and cut off points manually etc., to choose to use all outputs as one, two or three individual displays and to manage how SLI is apportioned across them.
