Welp, driver still crashes whole system for me.
EDIT: Maybe sometimes it's the Matrox box, because the green light goes red, and sound doesn't crash as it does when it's the Nvidia driver which bombs. And I don't always have this event viewer entry.

Another format later and I'm back on 191.03. Back where things work.

Just had my custom resolution nerfed by my system, it was running fine and then after a week it just mysteriously disappeared so now I'm back to 5040x1050@57Hz with a nag screen. I'm guessing it's the Matrox GXM that is deleting or overwriting it.

Does anyone have an idea on how to disable this behaviour as I still would like to have the GXM running for some of the other functionality.

Thanks for pointing that out Scav.

Currently managed to set up a 5040x1050@59Hz setting on Vista x64 using the following driver/firmware versions:

GXM 2_05_00_020
Nvidia 191.07
Firmware v2.3.40.t6.56

Hopefully this will stick, after making the changes Mattsimis setout.

I've also got 5040x1050 working, except at 60hz with GXM 2.05.00.020, nvidia 191.07 and firmware 2.3.40, 6.56.

Ok so colour me excited... after months of being XP and within days of me getting a free copy of Win7, the latest NV drivers allow me to get 5040. And according to Thales he can tun DX10! Not tested here just installed it and this is the first thing I have done.

ATi releases EF, very popular and now (after months of us whinging about it) 5040 is back!

I used 191.07, GXM 2_05_00_020 and firmware v2.3.40.t6.56. And the wizard works....

So don't give up, please try it, my EF purchase now on hold. I can now wait until Fermi gets out cos I have Win7 Pro 64 bit @ 5040 :)

Since I installed Windows 7 I have been coming here more and more often. I installed Win7 over my Vista 64bit Ultimate to give the new OS a try. However my older Vista OS has proprietary drivers for the 5040 x 1050 to work on it. So I was a little nervous about the upgrade.

Once I upgraded to Windows 7 I lost a lot of functionality immediately. Particularly Aero wasn't working. Aero is what makes Windows beautiful so there was no way I would settle for NO Transparency or any other feature.

First I tried to change some System32 files from some leads on google, and these were a bust, and FINALLY I come across Mach1.9pants post and I gave it a try.

Well, it works perfectly, so thank you Mach1.9pants
