Greetings,

My usually very qualified campus rep isn't up to speed with the whole eyefinity concept.

I'm redoing computer setup and I would like to mix things up a bit. Although this is mainly a work at home machine, it would be nice to game once in a while too.

I originally wanted to go with a 3x2 layout but since there seems to be a fix out for 5x1, I'd like to go down that path.

If at all possible, since my LCD TV would be on the other side of the wall, I wouldn't hate being able to drive it as an external, to avoid buying an HTPC. This isn't a priority, but would be a nice touch.

I have a 5770 right now, but the output configuration is HDMI/DVI/VGA, no DP. I'm guessing this is going to be an issue, so either I'll have to replace it or use it with a second card, perhaps a 5770 FLEX.

I'm also unsure what monitors to go with, I like the ASUS VE247H, but I'm starting to think I might as well just say fuck it and go with a rack of VE276Q's driven by a purpose built card, but I'd like to stay as close to 1000$ as possible, within reason.

Any suggested config

Sorry for the noob question, I've been reading up but I'm confused.

Thanks in advance!

5x1 portrait mode only works with the 5870 Eyefinity 6 card at the moment. No other card can currently do it. Also, it looks like you were asking if adding a second card would give you the extra ports to do this -- no because Eyefinity must use the ports out of a single card. The only card that can do 5x1P or 3x2L is the 5870 Eyefinity 6. The adapter configuration will be the first two ports will use passive mini dp to dvi adapters and the next 4 ports will use $30 mini dp to single-link dvi-d active adapters.

Just to be certain, you're wanting 5x1P not 5x1L right? Eyefinity only works with 5x1P.

port 1 -> mini dp to dvi passive -> LCD 1
port 2 -> mini dp to dvi passive -> LCD 2
port 3 -> mini dp to dvi active -> LCD 3
port 4 -> mini dp to dvi active -> LCD 4
port 5 -> mini dp to dvi active -> LCD 5
port 6 -> mini dp to dvi active -> TV

Yeah I was going for 5x1P, I read the sticky about the new config possibility.

As for stacking cards, yeah, I was hopping to salvage my current card but I'll probably put it on eBay to finance this.

Another alternative I'm hoping might work would be to use the 5770 to drive my TV since I'd rather pass a single HDMI cable through the wall. The 5870 would drive the work monitors on the other side of the wall.

However looking at the costs involved I might pussy out and just add a 5770 FLEX and do with 3 monitors. In this case, would the original 5770 be able to drive the tv as an external display?

My knowledge is limited to the 6000-series and the 5870 Eyefinity 6. My knowledge before used to be primarily NVIDIA based, so I'm uncertain how AMD handles mixing a 5870/5770 or 5770/5770 flex to drive different setups. It's outside of my knowledgebase.
