Post subject:  Recommended DisplayPort Monitors? (22-24")

Can anyone recommend a good DisplayPort monitor for use with my new Eye6 card? Ultimately I'm hoping to go 5x1 so bezel size is somewhat important, but so is cost [since i'll probably buy 5-6)

I'd prefer a smaller monitor as I have limited desk space, but I'd like at least 1920x1080.

Any thoughts? Price is somewhat of a concern, but I'm willing to take into account the fact that I won't need a Displayport to DVI adapter... so i'm thinking in the $250-400 range per monitor, but flexible.

Also, anybody still using 1920x1200 monitors?

Any reasoning behind your recommendations that you'd like to share would be helpful too.

Yes, I'm still using a 1920x1200 monitor. Haven't had it for that long...

HP ZR24w.

It's a 24" IPS display. Bezels aren't overdone. And it has DP. Cost me €400 though, so it might be slightly out of your mentioned price range.
It does move easily into portrait mode though, which might be interesting if you're on 5x1.
No it's not the one and only perfect display, but any better than this is going to cost an arm and a leg. Just about literally.

Oh, and you'll be needing an adapter still: mini-DP to DP.

If you're not bothered about colour accuracy though, you may want to go for a TN panel, they're a lot cheaper.

Definitely consider the Dell U2311H, which is on sale via a Dell Small Business coupon for $240 (& U2211H @ $224). I'm not sure why you'd go with the U2410, the EA231WMi, or the ZR22w / ZR24w while these are so cheap. When the coupon expires it will be a lot closer call w/ the U2211H vs ZR22w, but the U2311H will still be a good $60 less than the ZR24w or EA231WMi.

Any of these can be stripped of bezels and run with only the internal metal bezels in your way, if you figure out where to mount the controls..

5x1x1080p is actually a bit easier aspect ratio to work with than 5x1x1200x1920.

You're still going to need 5 linear feet of desk space for this, though.

I second that recommendation. The HP ZR22W is the 22" modell of that monitor, though is at 16:9 aspect (1920x1080).

I'm using three HP LP2275W. Quite impressed by the HP monitors!

For those with a 1920x1080 display, how do you feel about it when in portrait? I've always had 1280x1024 or 1680x1050 Landscape monitors... 1080x1920 seems like it might be too narrow. do you like it in portrait, or would you prefer it to be 1200 wide?

1080 in P is fine. At 96 dpi, it's 11.25 inches of printable space. Tall is definitely better than wide for working on most monitors. 2560x1440 and 2560x1600 maybe excepted as they're big enough that maximize to one half actually makes sense, and 1280x1024 swings both ways roughly the same.

I've found most web pages are designed for around 1000 ish pixels (1024 width, but more than 800). If your application has sidebars it does get a bit tight, but you can just push that portion of the window onto another monitor, nothing says your windows have to be exactly monitor sized.

I do occasionally wish for x1200, but not that much. Not enough to wish I had made a different purchasing decision.

1920x1080 feels too narrow in portrait, I'd prefer more space between the bezels you'd get on 1920x1200. It's also too wide in landscape imo.. 48:9 is very short and wide, 48:10 would feel a little better. I'd prefer 1920x1200 monitors over the 1920x1080 ones i got but these 1080 ones were quite a bit cheaper and it's not that big a deal.

I'm more interested in being able to mix in 120hz monitors in a year or so once the selection is there, and my feeling is 1920x1080 120hz monitors will still be a lot easier to find than 1920x1200 ones.

Me too but it will take a while to get some decent 3d capable monitors. I sold some of my Dells yesterday and might go for triple HP ZR24w. After a lot of reading and testing in shops I think its the best bang for buck in the 24"/16:10-range. Calibrated it will hopefully match the more expensive U2410 in picture quality and it sports better response time and slimmer bezels.

TFT central made a good review on this one:

Hope this helps.:)

Are the bezels slimmer on the 24" HP over the U2410?

Other things to bear in mind when looking for monitors is that firstly, TN monitors suffer even more from their limitations in portrait. Secondly, check the style, many don't have uniform bezels meaning that even though they may sit nicely side by side in landscape, they don't sit snuggly in portrait because of the styling.

Right - HP ZR24w fits perfectly for that. U2410 is 20mm bezel afaik (like my 2407). HP ZR24w is 16mm bezel. Thats a fine 24mm less bezel distortion in Eyefinity. My setup should arrive tomorrow - will take some pics then.;)
