Hey Gents,

First post here. Seems like a very nice place with lots of useful info :).
Apologies if this is covered in another thread. I searched with no luck.

I currently have a 5870 1GB, thinking about purchasing another card probably a 5870 6 2GB to run a crossfire config and bring my VRAM up to 3GB total.
I've got three (3) U2410s and I might add a forth monitor plus I would like to play BC2 at 5760X1200 maxed out  Will a 5870 1GB and a 5870 6 2GB run in crossfire?

I'm also interested in running a mixed mode config using Eyefinity (assuming I pick up the forth monitor). I would like to run a 3X1 Display Group plus a single extended display. Link below from amd.com. I think the only way you can run more than 3 monitors in crossfire is with the 5870 6 2G. Is that true and has anyone tried any of these mixed mode configurations?

Thanks for looking :).

Hey there,

I believe combining those cards WON'T give you 3Gb of VRAM. You will only get the LOWEST amount of VRAM of either GPU. ie 1Gb.

An Eyefinity 6 edition would be a waste IMO. To run 4 monitors simultaneously, you would need the Eyefinity 6 edition. To run this setup on a NON Eyefinity 6 edition, you have to turn crossfire OFF (which defeats the purpose of what you are proposing).

Also, you MAY get issues running crossfire + Eyefinity. ie poor/low frame rates.

Remember, at that res, you may not be able to MAX out your settings. You will probably have to turn down/off settings (AA/AF/Post processing etc) to get playable frames.

In my experience, I have NEVER been able to "MAX out" game settings in Eyefinity.

IMO, sell your 5870 1Gb and use a single 5870 Eyefinity 6 edition.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, GPUs in SLI and Crossfire don't share RAM as far as I know. Basically, one GPU renders one frame, then the other renders the next frame and so on... and each GPU requires it's own memory to do it. I know if you can run Crossfire between a 1GB card and a 2GB one, but if you can it would basically be like having 1GB per GPU, the extra GB on the second card would not be used.

In my experience, I have NEVER been able to "MAX out" game settings in Eyefinity.

You're running 3 30 inch displays? Given the benchmarks results I've seen for 5760X1200 I'm guessing your frame rates at native resolution aren't exactly great.

That is an understatement.lol

It's either a slideshow or a constant 12fps.

Nothing to write home about.

The strange thing is, on a SINGLE 5970 I get good frames. On a DUAL 5970 (quadfire) setup I get the slideshow.

Not bad for a $4000 outlay.lmao

Might consider swapping 1GB for 2GB E6.
See how that runs and if I get really greedy I might throw in another E6 :)
It's actually 3X 24inch Dells. 1920X1200 each. I think a fair number of people have been running that setup.
I play BC2 which doesn't appear to be a game that is used in many of the BM's on WSGF.
Thanks for the replies gents.
