Club3D MST hub - it's here but only 1080p (although I read somewhere it's actually 1200p) - so no joy for 1440p or 1600p. Also, at 150EUR it's not cheap. Personally I also wonder if it adds any lag/latency - I think it technically takes a 4k signal and splits it up which should be very fast but not instant.

So yay, sort of (although not for me planning 5x1p 1440p), but seriously where are the 6mDP 7970's?

That doesn't sound right. It should be able to do at least 2x2560x1600 if it's a real DP1.2 MST HUB. The HUB doesn't act like a Splitter, it acts like a USB HUB where individual resolutions can be set to individual monitors. Though nice review find, the reviewer doesn't sound like they went deep enough into the product.
