If the DP-VGA works, it works. It didn't for me.. But again, maybe because my LP2065 have only DVI connections.

I had the same experience using 3 x LP2065. Using the VGA adapter, even with top quality cable, gave an obviously inferior picture compared to DVI.

I know, just kidding.. Point is that we had this DP-VGA discussion for many times already. And i stick with it: i can see differences.
But maybe thats because i have 3 S-IPS 8-bit panels with true 16.7 mil colours. but lets not get into that discussion again.

If your displays have only DVI connections, how did you even manage to try any VGA adapters? :?:

Nope, pretty sure the poor quality of the images is due to you not knowing how to use your camera :).

(Hint: flash wouldn't have helped).

This is possible because HP supplies a DVI to VGA cable with its monitors. So VGA to DVI works (tried with a 8800GT & DVI-VGA adapter on my 5970). But no worky with the HP DP-VGA ctive adapter..

Also: never thought about it but ATI is not the only one using DP: Nvidia's professional line FX5800 and the new FX6000 also got DP!

If I follow you correctly then, what you attempted is using a DP->VGA adapter plugged into the video card's DP port; connected the VGA end of the cable to the VGA connection on the adapter; and then connected the DVI end of the cable to the display's DVI connection.

If so, I would never have expected it to work.

I don't see how the signal could be converted "down" to VGA and then back "up" to DVI by a simple cable. Does HP claim that this cable is made to do that?

From several years of personal experience with ATI cards, you would need the special DVI->VGA adapter that comes with ATI's video cards to even get a conversion from DVI to VGA. While I know those work going from DVI to VGA, I'm not sure they would convert the signal in reverse.

Well, this works:

This also works with Cat 10.1 and below **EDIT** just tried works in 10.7 again!! it didn't with 10.3, 10.4, 10.5 (didn't bother with 10.6)** in conjunction with cable above:

And again, VGA quality is so bad on my monitor, it makes my eyes water!! Really i'm not kidding, you can already see it with TEXT ONLY..

And last but least: the HP doesn't work..

Sorry for the bad photograph->phone

i convert the dp to dvi using either the passive or active adapters, then use something called HDFury to go from DVI to VGA ... it comes with the shortest VGA cable i've ever seen in my life, and thats why its image is just about as sharp as a DVI image, only some of the colours are abit changed because of how the signal is interpreted by the monitor

trouble is that this thing can actually stop windows from booting in most monitor configurations, you have to leave it unplugged while windows boots up otherwise the computer stops sending all video signals and stops responding... i have only managed to get it to boot up by using one specific monitor setup , a 3x1 eyefinity span and a seperate monitor, not sure if there are any other combinations which work

Make a ticket in the troubleshooting section with description of picture and whats wrong, and I'll see what you can do to improve this. :)

Preferably you can also make pictures of DVI and VGA to highlight differences (though pictures never captures screen colors etc correctly, it might aid in figureing out whats wrong).

RE: Bad VGA image:

I know when I got my very first ViewSonic LCD, I was quite disappointed with the image I saw initially. In fact, some reviewers were really carping on how bad the image was on these. But, I found that, within the OSD there's a setting to use either AV or PC. When I switched it to PC everything became crisp and clear again. The colors are very vibrant and the image on VGA now is just as good as DVI with what I see with my own eyes.
