I'm getting ready to upgrade my surround rig again, and I'm trying to understand if I'm going to require an active DP --> DVI adapter to get Dual Link 5040x1050 DVI output from the 5870 Eye6?

Or if I'm only driving one TH2G, will the passive adapter (or a different passive adapter) support Dual Link so I can output 5040x1050?

If I can't do it with a passive adapter, is there a specific active adapter you call can recommend that I could use with my TH2G digital?

I'm trying to decide what the most cost effective upgrade path is, since I already own 6 x 22" DVI monitors, i'd like to continue to use the TH2G in the short term, till I can afford to either buy multiple Active Adapters (or the price drops) or replace all the DVI monitors with DP monitors (and sell the old 22"s)

Why are you going with the Eyefinity6? Driving a TH2Go through an E6 seems like a waste. If you want 2GB and drive a TH2Go, then get a 2GB 5870. Why not get the Active Adapter and use Eyefinity?

Why? Because I can ;-P didn't you see the picture when I ran 2 TH2Gs off an 8800GT for Lotro like a year or 2 ago? :)

It's a temporary thing. Until I can afford to upgrade more equipment (my other option is to sell off 6 monitors and the TH2G and buy 6 new DP monitors... but I'm not made of money [so I can't just buy 6 monitors then sell the current ones] [not sure i'd get enough to make it worth selling them either]. And also helps with a decision point (because I might later move the TH2G to a different computer after I do upgrade to DP monitors) ... Seems a waste to pay 100-130 ea for Active DP-->DVI adapters, when I can hopefully get at least $100 22" DVI monitor and then replace them with DP monitors for about $250-300ea.

i'm also driving 4 monitors in my current setup, so I'd use one of the passives to drive the TH2G and the other to drive my other 22" until I can afford to swap out all the monitors for display port ones.

So anyway... back to the original question...
Can a passive adapter drive DVI - DL @ 5040x1050 or do I need to use an active one?

My guess is that it should work.
I guess so because they already include dp-dvi adapters with your EF6 edition.
Besides you can always try dp-vga
Dont you have the adapters already so you can try?

Interested in this myself since I'm already running 3 x 19" off a TH2Go together with a single 2407.

I want to go to an Eyefinity6 setup next with 3 x U2410s but also still use my existing stuff so would like to hang the 3 x U2410s and the 2407 directly off the card but make use of a fifth output to power the TH2Go at 3840x1024 to drive the 3 x 19". Will still have one spare output then (second TH2Go...?)

This would be for flight sim stuff with only relatively simple 2d guages and panels on the extras, main 3d output only on the 3 main panels.

Don't have any adapters yet, i've been holding off buying the 5870 eye6 until I figure out if there's a chance it would work. Not sure if the DP-VGA --> TH2G would work for 5040x1050... I thought there was a limitation for 5040x1050 to require DVI-D... but I could be wrong, i'll have to see if I can rig it up this weekend with my current setup.

You absolutely dont need an active adapter to use the TH2Go on a 5000 series card, because, you wont get 5040x1050, it's 3840x1024 max on the 5000 series cards. I wish ATI supported the TH2Go, it would make some interesting setups.

Wasn't that also in WinXP when you could do vertical spanning? I guess you would be planning on a 2x1 Eyefinity group?

lol, yeah, true that was with span, so fair enough. But if I did it, again it's a temporary thing and/or I might run a 3x1 (or 5x1 if it ever comes out) and use the extra output to drive the TH2G as a secondary monitor.

Let's get back to the original question and simplify it though...

Are there passive dual link DVI adapters? (if so, who makes them)
What is the max resolution? (2560x1600, 5040x1050) etc.

The real question is all about what can be driven passively with the 2 on board TDMS chips.

If I get 5870 card I can't use my TH2GO with 3x22" in 5040x1050 res?!
WTF!!! What max res for one DVI out on this card? :x
