Hello! I think I have a simple problem, at least for people more familiar with WS gaming. Right now I am really only playing cs 1.6 and AVP (lol its kinda fun actually). My situation is, I am used to using my CRT monitors when playing CS. I could care less about AVP, and I want to start using my LCD (Acer x191w, 5ms response time, 800:1 contrast ratio). I don't know if this LCD is even decent enough for gaming, I don't know much at all about LCD monitors. I just want to know how other people set up CS on a widescreen monitor , I play in 640x480. I have tried using higher resolutions but honestly I just can't get used to it. Do people play with the stretched screen? Or the black bars on the sides with the fixed aspect ratio??? I just want to know what the best way to be set up CS on a widescreen so I can try it out and determine if i should stick with my CRT or the LCD (or buy a new/better LCD later).

I don't think my specs are really necessary for this but I'll provide it just incase:

antec basiq 500w PSU
asus m2n68-am plus mobo
amd x2 245 2.9 Ghz processor
gskill 2GB ddr2 ram
80 GB maxtor HD (i know, but i dont use a lot of space, and i dont know which HD to upgrade to yet, im thinking SSD.)
galaxy GT240 512mb DDR5 graphics card
steelseries USB sound card/5hv2 headset
zowie EC2 mouse
pioneer DVD-RW drive

thanks! I used the search feature and could not find anything on here to help with this specific problem for cs 1.6. google didnt help either :(

:welcome

Here's how you can find info on a specific game:
-from the navigation bar at the top of the page, select Games, Hacks & Tools
-from the drop-down menu, go to Master Games List
-from there select letter C and look for Counter-Strike (version 1.6).

CS 1.6 supports widescreen natively, so you should be able to play at your monitor's native resolution (1440x900) no problem. Which is "the best way".
As specified in the Detailed Report:
Just go to the video options menu, enable widescreen from the drop-down menu, and then the list of available resolutions should include widescreen ones.

But if you really dig 640x480, fixed aspect ratio is the best solution I guess :|

yeah there's no way to play at the native resolution lol i understand for most games its truely the best way to go but cs is entirely different. and fixed aspect ratio doesnt work! it used to on my older computer. but now when i choose fixed aspect ratio it puts 2 black bars on the top and bottom of the screen rather than the sides. basically, you still get the stretched image and that is just awful!!

and thanks for telling me about the list, but nothing is listed under cs 1.6 :( lol
