I had never bothered to check out if I see any more with my 2005 monitor than non widescreen... till tonight.

I fired UT2004 up on my PC with the 2005FPW. Then I also started it up on my daughters PC with her Sony 17" LCD.

I made very, very sure to put both characters in the same spot, and then compared what I could see.

They are identical. ??

I saw in the list supported by the game that it has 1680X1050 so I have it set at that, and hers is set at 1024X768. They were the same. FOV in both games was set at 95.

Shouldn't the 2005FPW have a "wider" view?? What am I missing??

Thanks.
:)

Thanks for responding.

I found this in the user.ini:
DesiredFOV=95.000000
DefaultFOV=95.000000
FOVAngle=90.0

I imagine you mean for me to change the FOVAngle one. (Do I make it 95 or some other value?)

I still don’t fully understand though. Why should this be needed if the game says it supports widescreen? In addition, if I made the change (as can be seen by the 2 set at 95.00000) why does the game still have the FOVAngle at 90.0?

Just trying to understand this. I thought if a game supported the resolution out of the box, as UT2004 does, that all you need to do is pick your resolution from in the game.

Thanks for the help.

DesiredFOV=100.000000
DefaultFOV=100.000000
FOVAngle=90.0

try
130
130
130

and see what happens

I will try, but I still don't understand why I need to do this. The game is supposed to support widescreen out of the box. :?

If you set the Field of View the same, you'll see the same amount of ground area regardless of what aspect or res you are using. For a 4:3 monitor, FOV should be 90 or so. For a 16:10 monitor, it should be around 100. That will vary from game to game, though.

Paradigm Shifter...

I am not the brightest bulb so if you could explain that even further to me I would really appreciate it.

UT2004 is supposed to support widescreen out of the box. Now if say it is set to the default 90 degrees on both a 4:3 monitor and a 16:10 monitor, why would it still not inherently give you a wider view on the 1680 setup? For if not, then a 4:3 person would have widescreen just as much by just changing the default to 100 as well, correct??

I know this is a silly question, but I still don't understand why one would need to make a change, if the game supports widescreen.

I could understand if the game didn't support widescreen, but since this one does, should it not as I said when both set to same, just naturally give you more horizontal?

Thanks :)

Hello Enygma ...
UT2004 is supposed to support widescreen out of the box. Now if say it is set to the default 90 degrees on both a 4:3 monitor and a 16:10 monitor, why would it still not inherently give you a wider view on the 1680 setup?

Here is how I see it ...

Just because a game is supported OOTB doesn't meant to say that the FOV and resolution are inherently linked ... even if they should be (IMHO)
Some games do have this inherent link between FOV and resolution ... HL2 for instance.
Some like UT2004 give the user a choice ... see below.
Some games manufacturers consider a wider FOV for widescreens as cheating as widescreens users could then seem more compared to 4x3 users ... Battlefield 2 for instance .. and so it is not considered to have widescreen support.

UT2004 does support widescreen OOTB ... but they have approached this problem differently giving everyone the same FOV variation no matter what screen you have.
If the user sets up a FOV that is too wide or too small for there screen be it 4x3 or a widescreen then there game-play experience will look and feel wrong.
The user can choose the FOV that best suits their screen (or there preference) be it 4x3 or a widecreen ... from within the game ...

In the game go to ...
Settings ...
Player ... on the right hand side you will see there is a way to vary the FOV ...
Default FOV ... set it here to 100

Now the game will play look and feel right for your widescreen resolution.
You can have it at 90 if you want but it will look and feel wrong for your widescreen ... just as a FOV of 100 will look and feel wrong for a 4x3 screen.

This also gives the user a choice ... some people like a slightly wider FOV ... some like it a bit narrower than the default ... whether they are using a 4x3 screen or a widescreen.
So they might choose a FOV of 95.
That said ... 90 looks and feels about right at 4x3 ... 100 looks and feels about right for 16:10

So yes ...
For if not, then a 4:3 person would have widescreen just as much by just changing the default to 100 as well, correct??
... but it would look and feel wrong for them.

The user.ini hack/editing gives you the ability to change the FOV even further beyond what you can set it to within the game ... but as I say it is about what looks and feels right when you actually play the game.

I say ... good on UT2004/EPIC for giving us choice .... 8)
I hope this helps ... :D

Paddy hit the nail pretty much spot on the head. ;)

I agree - FOV should be linked to res chosen. That way games will deal with aspects correctly, and we won't end up with the flamewars that have resulted on other forums about how widescreen is 'cheating' because it gives you a larger field of view. *cough*Battlefield2Forums*cough* :)
