Alrighty

On AC then...

It seems that I was somewhat blind to this bug. I have since taken a closer look and I can see it. Very faintly though. I can't even take a good screenshot of it. But it IS present, so +1 to the bug group.

I ran the game in DX9 and have the bug there as well... I do NOT have it in DX10 however.

Question:

Does AC pixellate at 1280x720 and 1920x1080? If it doesn't, I would suggest that perhaps it's got something to do with the way the engine scales resolutions.

I was gonna buy this, but since this reared it's head, I'll leave it a while I think. I can still play the PS3 version in the meantime. ;)

No those resolutions do not have the problem, and that's the theory I put forth in my post at the top of the page.

As far as I can tell, any resolution that's a perfect 16:9 ratio will be ok. Both of those resolutions are exact 16:9.

I believe I have tracked down exactly when pixlization issue appears - it's occurs when the height of corresponding 16:9 resolution for whatever the width of the actual reoslution your using is odd.

E.g. the 16:9 resolution for the width 1680 is 1680x945. The height is an odd number. I'm betting the problem is the result of having a viewport that's not evenly visible by 2. Video cards don't like things that aren't multiples of 2.

All of the resolutions that Tanuki tested (1680x1050, 1360x768, 848x480, 720x576, and 720x480) that have this issue all have odd number heights in 16:9 - 1680x945, 1360x765, 720x477, 720x405 respectively.

1440x900 works because the 16:9 resolution for that width, 1440x810, has en even height - same with all of the other resolutions that don't have the issue.

How do you figure out the 16:9 resolution for your actual resolution? It's really simple. (X * 9) / 16 = Y Where X is the width value of whatever resolution your using and Y is the resultant the height for the the 16:9 resolution.

Sweet! Mad props to Racer_S once again. I wonder if this will fix the pixelization issue.

Sadly, it does not remove the pixelization issue. I currently put the odds of Ubisoft fixing the issue at 1:200 :(

This has been split from the Assassin's Creed: Detailed Report to keep the DR on topic.
Some posts referred to both the pixelization issue and the anamorphic bars ...
I did my best to split the topic to reflect the various issues ... sorry if this has affected your posts.

This post by Leapo in the Assassin's Creed and the anamorphic bars ... discussion is perhaps as relevant here as it concerns the pixelization issue ...
There's a fix for the blurry-scanline-ish problem people are having at 1680x1050; you'll still have black bars, but the scaling issue will be gone and you'll have a nice clear screen. This is a quick guide for making the necessary adjustments in Nvidia's drivers, I'm not sure of the method (or if this is possible at all) with ATi's drivers.

1. Right click the desktop and cselect "NVIDIA Control Panel".
2. Under "Display" select the "Change Flat Panel Scaling" sheet.
3. Set the scaling mode to "Use NVIDIA Scaling with Fixed Aspect Ratio". Click Apply.
4. Under "Display" select the "Manage Custom Resolutions" sheet.
5. Click "Create". Set "Horizontal Desktop Pixels" to 1680. Set "Vertical Desktop Pixels" to 945. Click "Test" and the custom resolution will be added.
6. Launch Assassin's Creed and set your screen resolution to 1680x945.

This feeds Assassin's Creed a 16:9 resolution, so the game removes the black bars and leaves the scaling up to the drivers (which is why we just changed the scaling mode to keep the game from being stretched vertically).

I can't say this will work for every one but I had this issue as well. I use a resolution of 1920x1080 and the pixilation issue was present at my maximum resolution. What I noticed is that my monitor or game, not sure which, will allow me to select multiple variations of 1920x1080. My guess would be that my monitor display 1920x1080 @ 30Hz, 29Hz, and 60Hz. However the in game options display all of the 1920x1080 selections as 60Hz options.

For example:

Every time I run the game in DirectX 10 mode I must change the resolution to get a smooth looking screen. The game is set to 1920x1080 by default. However if I go to change the resolution and click the right arrow key the apply button lights up. The resolution stays at 1920x1080 but I can select apply. If I select apply the pixilation goes away after applying the "other" 1920x1080 settings that are supported by my setup. I would post screen captures but it is difficult to show what I’m trying to explain with screen captures alone.

Are you sure you're getting the same pixelization issue described earlier? Only the lower half is pixelized along the diagonal?

From every report of the issue thus far, it only occurs when the 16:9 resolutions has an odd height and when running in DX9. Neither of these apply to your situation - and refresh rate shouldn't have anything to do with it.

I ran 1920x1080 in DX9 and did not have the issue, but can confirm it at 1680x1050.

If you are definitely getting the same problem, I'll have to rethink my theory on when it occurs

-------

BTW, UbiSoft finally got back to my support ticket and said they'll forward this info to the development team, but I have my doubts as to whether or not it will really get there.
