The HDMI signal itself will carry anything DVI does, which is basically anything. HDMI is backward compatible with DVI, as you probably know because I'm guessing you're using one of those simple cables with DVI on one end and HDMI on the other.
I've had special issues with getting my LCD TV to work at all, nevermind games, but I did get it to work. Using an nVidia card, though. I purchased an X850 because I thought it might be better for my TV then the 6800 but I was wrong. Returned it =)
Anyways, there's a lot of things that could be going wrong here. Does the TV work on a Windows desktop just fine? I'm guessing yes? What resolution does it show? That's the same one you picked in HL2?
Does the ATI card have an option to do Display Adapter Scaling like the nVidia card? (This basically forces the video card to display EVERYTHING out to the TV/monitor at it's native resolution, and the video card itself scales the picture.)
