http://www.gamersdigest.net/517/team-fortress-2day-of-defeat-update-released/

On this latest STEAM update list it gives the line: SOURCE ENGINE: Marked the r_aspectratio ConVar as a cheat

Does this mean the end of using widescreen in online Source games? I don't know enough about the variables but it doesn't look good!

I just did a quick join on a secure server for TF2. WS resolutions are still available in-menu and I ran triplehead in-game with no problem. Perhaps the convar provides tweaking outside of standard aspect ratios?

Yeah I couldn't do a quick run, I am DLing a game. That sounds hopeful :)

From a quick playthrough with TF2, it seems as though the aspect ratio variable allows you to alter to aspect ratio used per the resolution you're using.

AKA if you have a 1440x900 resolution used with a 16:9 monitor.

If you set it to a higher amount you can see through the walls of some of the maps if you're pressed against them.

The number of the variable is expressed in terms of the standard ratio, and as far as I can tell the default is simply 0 using the assumed aspect ratio for the resolution.

So widescreen still works, but people with odd hardware may have some issues.

And if Valve had indeed screwed the pooch in such a heinous manner, our GOTY awards would look very different indeed. ;)

Valve really ought to fix that instead of effectively disabling the entire feature, which is potentially quite useful for Plasma users.

Which in theory they could be doing, with this being a quick, short-term fix while they work on updating the engine itself to correct the problem.

Or they should put a limit on the variable.

It seems a bit hasty to me...
