I recently reinstalled GRID after having finished it a couple times. Seems to me I could use W,A,S,D before for car nav. Now it won't let me, what am I doing wrong?

You have to plug your keyboard in, Frag.

Are you being sarcastic or saying to unplug and plug it back in with the game running? If you're making a joke at least use a smiley to indicate, but right now I'm in no mood for it. I just tried patching to v1.2 and that didn't correct the problem.

Just checked in my game. The default config uses the arrow keys. To change this go to Driving Options, Controls, then click the second tab and edit the custom bindings.

Problem solved, but there's more to it than you described. I already knew how to do the bindings, I had simply forgotten there's certain functions you can't leave unbound.

If you just jump in there quick and rebind Accelerate, Left, Brake and Right to W,A,S,D, it leaves Shift Up unbound, because it's default binding is A. Why they would make you bind Shift Up when many using KB drive with Auto tranny, or why they would bind Shift Up to A by default when their default driving keys are the arrow keys is beyond me.

They need to understand that most KB gamers use W,A,S,D so much, their left hand is more dextrous than the right, at KB gaming anyway. They've got you driving with the right and and shifting with the left, which isn't even the way you'd do it in a real car if you're the typical right handed person.

I know CodeMasters is based in the UK and they have the steering wheel on the right in their cars, but this game is targeted much more toward US audiences than those in the past, just like DiRT. Anyway, like I said, problem solved. The only thing I'm having trouble with now is readjusting to the difficulty of GRID vs the NFS Undercover game I just finished, which is a cakewalk by comparison.

No biggie, more worried about whether I'll get my GRID skillz back right now. NFS seems to have at least temporarily retarded my dexterity. I had to give up on 2 Le Mans races so far. :(

That game is impossible with keyboard IMO. I guess if you practice you could master it but its very simulation like Gran Turismo so you need the subtle touch of analog. Id get a cheap xbox 360 wired controller if your serious about the game.

Heck I have a brand new wireless one with the adapter I am willing to part with cheap. (unopened in box still)

Grid's LeMans is seriously tough. Its duration takes toll on your eyes and reflexes so don't feel bad (I am happy when I finish it). Try advanced controls if your car feels too twitchy.

Le Mans sucks. Being almost forced to compete in a boring 24-minute race makes it even more annoying. It has nothing to do with the rest of the game's fast-paced action. I skip it most of the time

Keyboard rulez. Just like Dirt, the game may seem "impossible" to pad or wheel users, but it's not. Not always ideal alright, but I love these games and never felt the need for anything else than my good ol' keys.

Glad you solved your problem Frag, I felt a bit stupid submitting that previous post. :P (Actually I didn't know you can't edit the default keys and have to create a separate list of custom bindings...)
To me the key to aggressive and precise driving in Grid is acceleration control, even more than steering; something that really helped me get a grip on the game's controls and particular physics is drifting (did a lot of freestyle contests in my beloved Corolla). Once you start to score big, you know you've "got it" for most of the other race types and cars.
