read about it here
http://www.nvidia.com/object/windows_vista_hotfixes.html

"This hotfix resolves abnormal application behavior such as crashes and extremely low frame rates when running some 3D applications at very high graphics settings. This issue is not limited to, but has been most commonly noticed on high-end graphics cards and the following applications: Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, Civilization IV, Company of Heroes, Half-Life 2, Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth II, Supreme Commander, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas.

In order for this hotfix to be effective, GeForce customers must also update to the latest ForceWare Release 163 drivers: "

it is mentioned on main nvidia download page, so it should be really recomended.
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

I wonder if this is addressing the "memory management" problem, when the frame rate dropped after playing some time on Gf8 cards and it was recomended to use ALT+TAB (and jump back in the game again) in order to "zeroize" the graphics memory and raise the frame rate.

Maybe this is something different.

Wow, good news indeed, hopefully Vista SP1 will kick it up yet another notch. Come on 8800 owners, tell us how it works?

This update is a must have for anyone who games in Vista. It addresses the huge problem of the 2GB memory address space limitation of 32bit operating systems. The way that vista was handling address space was causing games to hit the limit and crash (especially if you run high resolutions). This update significantly reduces the amount of address space used during gaming.

This addresses the problems people had in STALKER, Supreme Commander, etc...

Now Vista's address space usage while gaming is MUCH closer to XP.

This is only really a band-aid for the problem though. The real fix is to go to a 64bit OS with the 8 Terabyte address space limit.
