Man oh man, RTS threads never fare well here. Ok, for my gratuitous bump, a question: Did anyone play the original Stronghold, or Stronghold 2 perhaps? I played the original when it first came out and enjoyed it, though there were a few shortcomings. I didn't play S2, but have been considering it. Supposedly the release version had some major problems, but I hear that the version 1.3 patch solved most of these issues. Also, has anyone given the following RTS games a shot? I'd love to hear your opinion: (any experiences w/widescreen would be helpful too) Rise of Nations Rise of Legends SWINE (yes, the one w/ the pigs and rabbits :) ) Armies of Exigo Empire Earth II LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth II |

Man oh man, RTS threads never fare well here. My C&C Tiberium Wars thread does really well actually
I got this game, it's pretty fun but it's more of the same from the original. Now, it's up to you if that's a bad or a good thing. :D I myself think it's a good thing because i was absolutelly hooked on BFME I. |

Sounds good, 'Steef. I played the original LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth also. I thought the Rohan Calvalry effect of running over Orcs was awesome, too bad they gave the orcs pikemen eh? The one thing that disappointed me a little bit (could be a negative or positive actually) was that it wasn't more Warcraft-like. There was no resource management, and everything was built on predefined spots. I think that made it feel slightly restrictive in a way. However, If they've added more units and varied the gameplay a bit, this might be enought to justify getting the game, b/c it was still a LOT of fun. My C&C Tiberium Wars thread does really well actually Wink Me thinks that is the first one ever to do so. |

About the predefind spot thing. In part 2 they ditch that and to tell you the truth i thought it was less fun then in part 1. :) |

Oh really? So you can just your base anywhere on the map, ala Starcraft? Is it still combat focused, or did they integrate some resource management (or, as I suspect, is the research management all about your military units?) |

Yeah, it's true. :D And there is hardly any RM in the game. Still the only thing you have to do is build mines or farms, wait till you have enough money and build your units. :) |

Well, that's ok. I think the immersion factor of the game tends to make up for many of its shortcomings. :) Did you play the original and the sequel at a widescreen resolution, or just with black borders on the side? |

When i played part 1 i didn't have a widescreen yet. On part two i first played it stretched an later with the hack that made it vert- i believe. But i'm not really sure though, it's been some time since i last played them. :) |

Yea, sometimes I wonder...with RTS games there is definitely the temptation to just play the title stretched, so it fills up the whole screen. I remember playing Warfcraft III this way, (in the days before I joined the WSGF or knew much about Widescreen FOV's/Aspect Ratio's at all) and it was pretty fun. Still, if my native widescreen resolution is too high for a relatively smooth frame rate (what with all those elves and dwarves running around) I don't think i'd overly mind playing at 1600x1200 or 1280x1024 with black bars on the side. |
