As PS also mentioned, there are serious performance issues with Shift even on high end systems. There appears to be a PhysX and AI performance hit, and I've also noticed graphic corruption. When I started having problems not being able to run any race without a BSOD, it was right after the car gauges turned to a red/green blur instead of showing a dial with a needle and numbers.

I'm not surprised PS got Shift running on a dual GPU ATI card though, as those and Crossfire setups seem to have a much greater chance of it. Since some have said Intel/ATI combos cause problems, I wonder if it's something to do with Intel's crossfire capability in their chipset somehow overriding the API, and working only with dual GPU setups.

Tried it with an E5300 (@3.9GHz)/4GB/8800GT as well. Also a Q6600/4GB/4850... they play about the same, to be honest. Doesn't seem particularly bothered about the difference between duals or quads (or cache, for that matter)... it still runs like shit when I get into a situation where physics is involved. The 8800GT seems to cope a little better than the ATi cards, but it's still an unplayable slideshow fest. One particularly big jerk took me from on the track following the racing line perfectly, to smack into the tyres at the side of the bend about 50 yards ahead. It was like someone shunted me and the physics treated the car like a rubber ball! I'd try it out on my Opteron rig, but that is currently missing both a PSU and a GPU...

If it wasn't for the terrible fps impact of situations involving PhysX, I'd actually say Shift was half decent. As it is, it's next to unplayable for me as a serious game due to it.

You misquoted what I said, "won't play on most ATI based rigs", is in fact what I actually said.
by that I understand the majority of ATI based computers
which means 51% at the very least of ATI based computers
since there's about 30% ATI users out there ( http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey )

that would mean about 15% of ALL users having issues with this game
that would be a lot, and if that's really the case then the developers and producers have a major strategy problem. 5% of users affected... is already pretty big and will provoke quite an uproar on communities ...

Somehow I have a hard time believing this, which doesn't mean that it's true or false, just that it's really a big mistake from a pure financial point of view and we all know that money is never taken lightly...
in the end I think Sting got a point, your statement was a bit over the top.

However that's only my humble opinion and it's only conjectures... so it does not mean a single thing on your intelligence or anything for that matter :wink:

I'm going to just ignore that BS Whis and refuse to comment other than to say you are ignorant of the scads of people mentioning the problem on ATI rigs, yet very few by comparison on Nvidia. Check up on it before spewing speculating.

All that they are saying is that even though there might be lots of people having problems, contrary to you're quote I'm sure that it plays fine on most ATI based rigs. The ones who have it working fine never say that they do, they just play.

Exactly.

And more to the point, it is probably not a specific issue with all ATI cards in certain categories, or else the problem would be more widespread.

And again, it was never a personal comment, and I don't know why it was taken as such.

I'm finding lately that I'm wasting money on games, and I Think that's because I recently got a house so I'd rather buy something for that than a game. My proiorities have changed so games slide down the list.

I still very much enjoy the gaming side of computers, just feel that the games I have are good to play over and over.

Well i'm either getting Batman or Resi5 this week, haven't decided yet. Since all i've done is slam money into this house and five games that I want have been released all in one go, I think it's time to treat myself.....

Playing Red Faction: Guerrilla now, and actually getting less lag on my P4 than many with dual core rigs are describing. I really only get bad lag when toppling big buildings, which most but those with quads seem to be saying. You can't judge a game by what one or a few say they experience. I would never imply the game runs fine on all P4s merely because I can run it on mine like has been implied above about ATI cards on Shift and RE5.

RF: G is a crazy game. It's very fun and fast paced with lots of action and effects, but in some ways it just doesn't make sense. AI are useful in battle, but get in your way and hang so close the buildings you destroy topple on them as they scream. Enemies respawn constantly and swarm with vehicles that often pile up and trap AI. I even had to use my rocket launcher to escape such a fate myself once after merely going to pick up some ammo.

Intense battles, nice vehicles and weapons, wide open landscapes, wonderful destruction capabilities, yet ironically too much clutter, cramped quarters, and no ability to command AI to avoid them smothering you like drunk puppies. This game is overall very worth playing, but it sadly makes nowhere full use of it's potential.

There are challenges in tanks where you have to destroy scads of vehicles, but while staying in a small circle. It's as if the devs thought, what the heck, lets just use the massive maps for traveling around in and have all the combat take place in one small space. :roll:

Well I went mad and bought both (what the hell); can only seem to play resi5 on DX9 as DX10 keeps locking up and to be truthful it's a bit of a dissapointment for me; batman seems good and loads of fun though.
