I don't think anyone should worry about the quality of the story and voice acting, as R* have proven themselves in those areas time and time again.

I also wouldn't worry too much about gameplay, as it is a pretty simple genre and R*'s shooting mechanics in GTA4 were well done.

I'm mostly worried about the quality of the PC experience.

Yeah, Michael Hollick was named Best Male Voice Actor at the 2009 Video Game Awards, I think that says a lot right there. When you listen to him talk you'd never think he could do such a superb Serbian accent unless you already knew he was the voice for Niko Bellic. Michael added intense emotion to the part. It really felt like you were immersed in the Bellic family in missions like the one where he rescued his cousin Roman.

I'm not even worried about the quality of the PC experience because Rockstar is still surprising us with continued support for GTA IV PC. From what I've seen so far they've delivered on game fixes and word is the new GTA IV patch is even better, having even more fixes and optimizations that make the game run noticeably better. I'm looking forward to trying it soon.

They also showed us in GTA IV they can excel at making very nice cityscapes with realistc graphics and effects, like putting in nuances such as Euphoria physics enhancement. They are one of few developers that have used Euphoria and now they have lots of money from GTA IV sales to continue making nice games with a large development team having specialists in each field.

R*'s shooting mechanics in GTA4 were well done.

They were well done for a GTA game, but they wouldn't be adequate for a game that revolves around shooting. Max Payne 1's shooting mechanics were much more advanced and finely tuned than GTA4's.

Payne-style action turning to gamepad-friendly shooting would be a real downfall. Did Rockstar ever develop a PC shooter btw ?

I found GTA4's shooting on PC to be exceptional, myself. If you turn the reticule to "simple" mode it is just a dot, and mouse accuracy is full-on and done well, which is a breath of fresh air when most games now are doing those large hit-box reticules.

Also, the physics of the GTA4 engine made for really, really good reactions to bullet hits... everything zone specific, every animation almost perfectly done in response.

I think GTA4 wins as a shooter.

Trouble is, it's not the same dev. GTA4 was made by Rockstar North, where as this is made by Rockstar Vancouver, so it will be different people working on it. Sure they can borrow a lot from GTA4 and what R* North did, but it doesn't mean they'll have the same design quality. R* Vancouver made Bully which wasn't all that (imo of course) and then a terrible port came to the PC some time after. Just doesn't instill confidence in me :(

True enough... still, I would assume this game will have a large budget and hopefully the support of all of R*...

I was going to jump in sooner regarding the shooting mechanics comments, but wanted to see if anyone else but myself were not too worried about it. I agree with SV, the shooting in GTA IV was fine IMO. I was actually worried it would be too console in nature with a heavy target lock effect. After playing through it 2 or 3 times I still don't know what people mean by target lock because it felt very free aim to me with smooth, hitch free mouse action.

If anything, the shooting in Max Payne is too easy by comparison because you can constantly dive in slow mo, making it easier to get in head shots. They even did the cover system pretty well in GTA IV, it didn't feel too sticky and cumbersome like GoW did. The 3 missions that paralleled movie scenes from Heat, To Live and Die in LA, and one other I can't think of were very well done. You really had to time your advances sprinting from cover to cover using your weapons well.

As for worrying about which division of Rockstar is developing it, I'm not really concerned about that either. Don't forget that all along Rockstar has been the publisher for Max Payne, overseeing it's quality control. As well, GTA IV was developed by quite a few divisions of Rockstar. Just look at the credits and you will see the name Rockstar appear on several different developer locations. When they say GTA IV is developed by a team of 150 developers from all over the world, they are not joking.

Can anyone think of that other famous movie paralleled by GTA IV, it's driving me nuts?

Neato. I've always liked the Max Payne games Well, except the lack of widescreen support .

And wow, this thread was started nigh three years ago.
