Does everyone get the black bars or is that a setting?

Mario 64 is like that. My guess is because of overscan. On your N64 back in the day you would not have seen the black bars, but now on you computer overscan is a thing of the past.

The widescreen emulation is only viable for games that don't have any pre-rendered backgrounds as those are only designed for fullscreen.
